Longest Trip with the Spider Yet.

Yesterday we took her on a 250 mile day trip...our longest yet, a cruise on the back roads with some friends up to Nebraska where we like to stop for lunch along the river at a place called Wild Bill's that we stumbled across by missing our turn, and has some amazing food. It also has a great patio area that overlooks the river, before we cross into Missouri and work our way back home. It was the longest "trip" with the Spider since we got her back. It was a rainy day...with off and on showers...so I got a lot of practice putting the top up and down.

One place we like to stop is a small town called White Cloud, KS..which use to be a stop for the old paddle/river boats back in the day, but now main st has no businesses...but the town does have quite a few people that live there. If you stand up on the hill, and look back down main st to the river...you can almost imagine the town in it's prime back in the late 1800's when paddle boats would transport goods and people up and down the river. It's also the town (supposedly) where the idea for the piggy bank was created. Normally it's quite dead there. As we were driving..and getting closer to White Cloud, we passed a flea market...but didn't stop because it looked like a mud pit..plus no place to park. My wife made a comment about wouldn't it be cool if this was the weekend that White cloud has it's once a year flea market. Well..guess what..it was. We did some "antiquing" where I did manage to find some Matchbox Lesney's..and Tootsie Toys in the original package. My wife and friends went up to the 4 corners look out where they have erected a platform and you can see Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas from that spot (I stayed with the Spider..and didn't want to risk taking her up there). Think next year we'll try to remember to do the trip again, bring more cash, and make it a point to stop at the other flea markets we saw.

On our way back...decided to mainly stay on the the interstate...I was tired...and didn't want to take back roads driving through near blinding rain at times. The car did amazingly well, though one of the torrential down pours happened while we were stopped for lunch, and when I checked on the car...a little water had gotten on the passenger seat through a small gap where the upper front of the door meets the roof. But..it was raining really hard and the wind was strong also. On another note...we did manage a little over 20 mpg which I think is pretty good for an almost 40 year old car.

Here's some pictures our friend Dusty took of us. The one with the rainbow she calls "The Treasure at the end of the Rainbow". It was a good day.

Thanks....Dusty said she tried to get a better/closer shot of the rainbow one...but we took off to quick. Though it's definitely not going to win any races..it is a peppy little thing...and I'm enjoying driving it more and more.

Again...thanks for the responses. I will say not having power assist anything...it's a little more "exhausting" to drive than a modern car (if that makes sense)...but still fun in it's own way. Not sure if we'll ever take her on long over night trips down to Arkansas, but for day trips to explore/go antiquing, she seems to be ideally suited. I really haven't driven the Abarth much since we got the Spider back. Today we're taking the Abarth on a benefit cruise for a couple deputies that got killed though a few months ago. The kids know to look for it now to get their free Hot Wheel/Matchbox at these things...so it's useful also in trying to help in fundraising.
