    500L Blown engine-out of warranty!

30 days out of warranty though 13K out of the mileage part of the warranty @ 63K total miles. #2 cylinder has 0 compression with some metal debris around the piston. FWIW, I was getting a P0299 code and had a wastegate solenoid on order; I also did the boost leak fix after the first code and then started getting a P1CEA code; When it actually died, I was passing a car under high boost and I notice the boost started to stutter then I lost all power after that. I'm going to be selling it once my studio replaces the engine. I found one with 17 miles on it for $700. The guys at my studio are giving me a break on labor as well since we have 3 Fiats which they service. I bought a new Focus ST for my daily for better or worse. I wanted to get another Elle but my dealership only has five new Fiats -- three 124's & two 500X's. Rumor has it that they're going to stop selling Fiats & just sell Alfa's & Rubicon's. Anyway it was a great car until this happened but it's time to move on.

Wow, sad to hear. Sorry to see the car go. That is one, if not, the best looking elle's I've ever seen.

Update: Well, everything's finally ironed out and changed my mind. Got a basically new engine in the car, (17 miles) installed. Decided to keep it after all since I love it so much and ended up selling my wife's Sport. So now she gets the ST as her daily though it was fun to drive while the Elle was getting fixed!

Hi I dont know much about repairs, but my 2014 500L also had engine failure. Theyre saying its $9000 (and Im 5 months out of warranty) to replace it. I see youre talking about a $700 engine. Where should I look to find a cheaper engine or are we talking about different things here? Thanks!

car-parts.com is a great source. Keep in mind, the engine is the same whether it comes out of a Fiat 500L, 500 abarth/500t, 500x 1.4 and the Dodge Dart. A few parts transfers are needed as there are some slight differences but nothing major or serious. Finding one out of a Dodge Dart is usually the cheapest.

LKQ on eBay is also a good source of used engines. They provide accurate mileage of the original vehicle and a brief warranty. Some eBay sellers are "just wrecking yards" and your experience may vary with those as to their honesty and condition of the engine. Of course LKQ engines also come from wrecked cars. It seems their pricing formula is confusing, however seems based both on condition and possibly location of the engine. I got a very low mile (10,000 mile) engine for only $750+Shipping ($1000 all in) from a Dart. That was on the very lower end of their pricing scale for a low mile engine.

When I got the engine, there was some damage which is probably why the price was low. But nothing I couldn't handle. Oil cooler was dinged a bit (but intact and functional). Thermostat housing was broken, but I could use the one off my old motor. The only "real issue" is the threads for the exhaust support bracket were broken off the block. However with the aftermarket downpipe and make sure the bolt on the midpipe is connected well, I am pretty sure it will be fine. I would prefer to have that bracket, but not worth returning the engine over. Especially since an engine with comparable miles normally would be around $1000 to $1300 from them.

Whatever you do, there's no reason to cheap out and get a 70,000 or 80,000 mile engine. They are for sale also, but pass them up and find one below 20,000 miles. The price difference isn't worth the labor to reinstall an engine that goes south.

As aelfwyne said, LKQ on eBay is a good place to start. That's who I bought my engine from but I think I later went to their website and searched further. The engine I purchased was off a brand new 500L. It still had the white plastic they use during shipping on the car that was referenced with the engine.

BTW, what caused your engine failure?
