Sergio Marchionne to be be replaced now due to health reasons.

"MILAN/PARIS (Reuters) - Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne is to be replaced permanently at the helm of the global carmaker as well as Ferrari, after suffering serious complications from surgery, people with knowledge of the matter said on Saturday."
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-f...-idUSKBN1KB08W

I knew he was planning to retire next April so this came as a bit of a shock for me. Sergio Marchionne has great instincts- he took two left for dead companies written off by most of the motoring press and made a single, very profitable (and soon if not already, debt free) entity out of them. Over the next few months probably the only certain thing for FCA will be uncertainty.

Wall Street Journal says Jeep head Mike Manley is the new CEO (article may be behind a paywall)....

DETROIT "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles FCAU NV appointed the head of its Jeep brand as its new chief executive Saturday in an unexpected move to replace the ailing Sergio Marchionne, who engineered the merger of Fiat and Chrysler and led the combined company for nearly a decade."

I'll guess that there won't be any big changes, since FCA had recently announced their next 5 year plan, and like rust bucket said, Sergio was going to retire next year anyway. Also changing will the the Ferrari leadership, since Marchionne also held leadership roles there.

Oh man that is too bad. I think he was just having shoulder surgery or something, but apparently something went wrong.

This is very sad. I have a lot of respect for Marchionne, always loved listening to his reports, even when he was his surprising self.

that too bad, wish him well. he helped lead fiat to good times. I just wished that Fiat sold a full line of cars like you see in other countries. but anyways hope he is ok. maybe that's why it was so sudden.

I learned the news just after watching Kimi lose his spot to Bottas and Seb going into the wall.

Sergio Marchionne is one of the greatest auto CEOs ever:
    - He brought FIAT back from the brink of certain death.
    - He took over the helm at CDJR (completely changed their corporate culture - albeit not their local dealer culture).
    - He cleaned up the CDJR branding system (a move that strengthened the bread winners and clearly exposed the wasters).
    - He imagined, championed and led the merging of FIAT S.p.A. and CDJR.
    - He returned a lot (not all) Italian car manufacturing to Italy.
    - He relaunched Alfa Romeo with the style and flair we expect (the brand also returned to F1 sponsorship).
    - He remade Maserati (they were boring for a while - they actually look like they matter again).
    - He took over the helm at Ferrari and took them to a place of expecting 25% profit margin increase (also put some fire under the F1 team).

All these accomplishments happened in the span of 14 years. Then, we can begin listing all the models he approved. That's not all. He served in other industries that were closely related to SF sponsorship. He admitted to owning more than 4 individual business-only phones. He slept very little as one would imagine.

It's not only a sad time for Italian car enthusiasts. It's a sad time for auto industry nerds. 'Wish him and his family well.

    Respect.
