New 2018 Uconnect in my 2017: Can it be Done?

    Hello--

I bought my 2017 Pop model (manual transmission, backup-camera option) late in 2017; my dilemma was to take it at the steep end-of-year discount, or to wait for a 2018 that would be virtually identical...save for the new Uconnect with Apple CarPlay. I opted to buy the '17.

Needless to say, the 2017 touchscreen radio is a bit disappointing. Is it possible to retrofit a new '18 radio into my '17? My local dealer says no, but a) I'm not convinced that he has actually researched it, and b) I sense he is annoyed that I didn't buy my '17 from him.

I'm curious to know if anyone has first-hand knowledge of swapping a new Uconnect system into a 2016 or a 2017 model.

    Thanks.

Your dealer is correct..not possible. The car won't recognize the new radio and it won't work. Only option is aftermarket. I highly suggest Pioneer. They make some great radio options and mine works flawlessly.

were you able to maintain use of the OEM USB ports? This is the only thing holding me back right now.

If not, how do you hook up to CarPlay?

I lost the OEM port but the installer said he was confident he could retain it by using a "USB 2.0 A male to USB B mini 5 pin female adapter converter" that is available on Amazon. He just didn't have one so couldn't try it. He routed the cable from the radio to the center console side piece in the passenger footwell. The port sticks out from the bottom of the panel and can be pushed up to hide it. It's not noticeable from the driver's seat. It's not as convenient but if you keep a cord plugged into it, it's easy to connect the phone for charging or CarPlay. All other car functions were retained and I even gained some extra info like intake temperature by using a Maestro controller.
