2012 Fiat 500 POP (MT) Axles Issues

Hello everyone, I wanted to share with everyone my issue with the axles on this Frankenstein year of the 500 (with the manual). Let me explain the symptoms, the entire car shakes in third gear when accelerating. The shaking is most noticeable in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, again under hard acceleration. The shaking radiates from the right side (passengers) front. Can't feel the shaking in first and second no matter how hard you accelerate. I went ahead and replaced the passengers side motor mount and did that while changing spark plugs (it was easy to do). No luck and issue was still there.

So I lifted the fiat up and tested the ball joints, wheel bearings and all checked out. When I grabbed the passengers side CV and moved it in and out wards I could hear a click. I figured it was shot and that play was causing my shaking and ran into my first problem... finding the new part! However, being the way I am I wanted to make sure I had found the problem and sent the car off to a CDJR dealer right down the street. After a full 24 hours later I got a call from service stating that both axles were bad and that the drivers side axle had been bent and was causing damage to the "Differential" (if I am not mistaken the axle would be destroyed or explode/ always cause a shake if that was the case, AND when I was under the car I noticed no such issue on that side). Anyways I let the man go on to say both sides should be replaced and that EACH AXLE would be $1050 PLUS 2-3 hours of LABOR a side, so $1500 for each side to do CV AXLES. I about had a stroke on the phone and told him that would not be happening and thank you for the highway robbery he tried to pull on me.

So after a few hours digging around and a few phone calls I was able to figure out the new part number for passengers side axle is #68100422AF (Please check your 2012 VIN for manufacturer date, if it is after 2/13/2012 use the part number I just state, if before or on 2/12/2012 use part number #68100423AC) Left side after 2/13/2012 use #68100423AF, and before or on 2/12/2012 use #68100423AC.

I ordered just the right side (which was $280 plus shipping) and hope it fixes my issue. What do you all think, think that dealership tried to pull a fast one on me or am I the dummy?

This is useful info, thanks for posting such a detailed report. I have been advised by a mechanic that I trust that my car might need CV joints in the near future due to a leaking boot. My Sport was built in Jan 2011 and has 56,000 miles.

I certainly hope the new parts will solve the serious problems you are having. Please post a follow-up when you can. Sharing information like this is one of the great features of this forum.

WillFiat - I will post when I have started the repair and do my best to take some photos to document the repair process as well as pointing out the issue. The dealer was misleading when I spoke with them and sounded like they threw big numbers at me to scare me off and not do the repair or to make good money on the project. This Fiat is for sale, and luckily the lady who wants to buy it from me understands and wants me to do the repair work and will still pay my asking price (should the shaking go away). Worst case in my mind I will keep the car and drive till the transmission explodes.

Stay tuned for more details and others feel free to chime in with questions, comments, hate and love.
