Fiat sales for June 2018 show the brand sold a total of 1,426 cars last month, a 36% drop compared to the same month a year ago. The lack of availability of the traditional best selling hatch and Cabrio models has continued taking its toll on sales. Fiat closed the 500's production line last September to retool for the 2018 model year. While production of the 2018 500 has begun, the arrival ...

Let’s just hope this doesn’t equate to consumers thinking FIAT is pulling out of the country again before the latest brand strategy takes shape. It’s good to see people are taking advantage of what is available though.

They need to do something to refresh the brand a bit I think. I look at the marketing and special editions that happens in the UK versus the US.

    Special Editions

I get that the UK buys more smaller cars than the US, but I see plenty of Nissan Jukes, and Kias, Fiestas etc. I bet if there was a limited run of special 500s, say 500 of something like the Abarth Rivale, that have an extra snarl, and feel a bit updated then people would fight over them.
    2013 500c Abarth - phase 3
    2012 500 Pop - daily
    2016 Range Rover Evoque - Wifey's

I'm not sure the SE strategy would work (as much as I'd like to see more 500 SEs in our market). FCAUSA doesn't need 500 unit sales... the company needs thousands and not many people will pay the fat premium on what is essentially the same car. The people who would not be game to spend the extra cash are the ones we need to see in FIATs and ABARTHs.

The EU is also transitioning to larger hatches. The shift to Global Platforms means few automakers will be able to afford dedicated subcompact platforms... but I hope it works the other way around. Yes, save and make money on the mid-sized to larger vehicles and use the savings to invest in tiny hatches!

    Clearly.

My point wasn't to poo-poo you idea. My point was merely stating a fact. The few SEs FCAUSA has offered didn't sell all that well (except, maybe, the Gucci). The GQ sold well in Europe... they got the standard 500. We got the A500 as the donor car for our GQ and you'd still see never owned units on lots 2 years after the release. The Cattiva didn't sell well either.

It seems a car needs to be popular to from the start in order for an SE to make a difference. Releasing SEs is not a way to boost slow or nonexistent sales. Sad but true 'cos I'd luv more SEs here.

Still say they should make the 500L in an AWD unit. Or an Abarth.

I don't see a precedent for an ABARTH version but I definitely think an AWD option would help prop that model. It's always been the case. The 500X is available as front wheel drive... the 500L should come in both options as well.
