It's sad, but frankly I'm more likely to buy the convertible.

I guess that's the problem, it's just not selling enough to warrant keep updating it.

Not a huge deal since they will continue making the 4C Spider. I think their business strategy is to focus on getting Alfa and Maserati to be high volume cars, so that means more sedans and SUVs. Any two seater sports car is going to be smaller sales, probably from Miata to Porsche and everything in between.

For a carbon fiber bodied car at a somewhat reasonable price compared to McLarens and whatever else is carbon fiber, I think the 4C is awesome! Not even sure if they make a profit on it.

Just a guess on my part but I'd call it a cost cutting move; I'm thinking it has to do with the cost of expensive federal certification (crash safety and emissions) and the spider and coupe having to be certified separately. According to the numbers I found, the 4C (both coupe and spider) sold 406 units in the U.S last year, not the kind of numbers that FCA figures would justify certifying both.

I don't think this article... and the corporate move it chronicles... is meant to say anything about FCA or how the health of Alfa Romeo. Other users are spot on it their views. One must look at overall sales. I prefer the hardtop, but I'm in a minority. I will always chose the hardtop over the Spider if given the choice. FCA made the decision it made for the same reason it decided to offer a turbo-only FIAT range in the US... a dedicaated platform for a niche product. That forces the automaker to be conservative in how it continues production of those offerings.
