Just tell them that all their cash is part of our brand. Problem solved.

The crankshaft oil seals on these engines are pretty thin anyway, so any left over oil coking buildup around the crankshaft from the previous leak , or if the shop didn't install the seal flat with the proper tool could cause premature failure.

Well, heres the latest. The dealer did replace the rear main seal again and Fiat did agree to cover this second replacement. But... now they tell me that the oil pan seal is leaking and that would cost more than $1,000 to replace. I told them no. Ill bring the car home this afternoon, put a kitty litter pan under it and shop around for more estimates.

I like it but maybe just a bit esoteric for the crowd that’s razzing me. Still, makes you wonder if we shouldn’t re-adopt the gold standard.

Sorry Ando. I didn’t mean to imply engine braking itself was bad. I didn’t word it right. If the pvc system wasn’t working adequately, engine braking’s resultant positive cranckcase pressure could push oil out. So in your or my case where we do a lot of it, seeing oil leaking out a main seal, I would look at the pcv system for good function, and as well, if there are puffs of oil vapor on decel.

compression braking is good (this retired trucker condones it)

No sweat, I appreciate you taking the time to circle back with the explanation either way!

I read here and on the black forum how the pcv can get clogged and that guys clean it out. Also what KellyfromVa said. Sheesh. My car is spotless at 50000miles with an engine tune.
There’s also an o-ring that leaks where the pcv attaches to the valve cover. Perhaps it’s (o-ring) leaking way down low—a couple dollars easy cheap fix.
