    Trouble codes

I got a new gas cap about 6 months ago and I cleared the codes
Recently I got these codes...I have cleared them but they pop up now and then

-P0455: EVAP System Leak Detected (large leak) (Powertrain, Generic)
-P0456: EVAP System Leak Detected (very small leak) (Powertrain, Generic)
-P0457: EVAP System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off) (Powertrain, Generic)
    Any suggestions

There could be leaks in a couple of places:

    1. The cap itself (Check the condition of the seal under the cap where it interfaces with the filler neck)
    2. The filler neck fits into a rubber hose (looks like a radiator hose) between the neck and the tank to allow for flexing
    3. The emissions hoses that come out of the tank, filler neck etc to the charcoal canister. Unless there is major damage to one of these (Hard plastic) hoses, or the canister itself, these will usually only throw an Evap Small Leak code

Large leak is 'Usually" the cap or the neck. That said, the gas cap code can throw you off, as a large leak on the filler neck or gas cap seal, will make the emissions computer think that there is potentially a missing cap. The code is usually generated when the ecu checks tank pressure at start or shutdown, depending on ambient temperature. If the pressure is below the acceptable threshold, it indiactes there is a leak in the closed fuel tank system. Have you ever noticed gas fumes around the area where your fuel filler is, when the cap is shut?

I also have an EVAC p0456 small leak code. My dealership is worthless for getting a new cap. Is there anyway to "renovate" the rubber seal on the existing cap? I had this happen a year or so ago, and simply putting the cap on an off a few times cleared it.

Also, is it something I could just live with, i.e. doesn't really effect performance?

I'm surprised your dealer doesn't have caps in stock. For your model, you can also buy them at parts houses (as opposed to those for the 2018 & 19). I assume the Fiat is like my previous car and it caused the computer problems when the cap was leaking.

Try cleaning the filler neck where the cap seal goes. Sometimes it gets nicked up from putting the fuel pump nozzle in. You can use a light scrubby with maybe some WD40 on it. As for the gas cap, try some Vaseline on the seal to see if that will help the sealing.

Assuming it is just your gas cap, the P0456 code is not something that is going to leave you stranded. It is a common code and many just live with it. The bureaucrats at the EPA just don't want any extra gasoline vapors being released into the atmosphere. That's a crime against humanity now-a-days.

Having said that, if you try the above or you get a new cap and still have the issue, it could be other things, too. Like a leaky EVAP line or canister. It's a good idea to fix that, but it's not an emergency situation.

PS, if you buy a new cap, get an original gas cap and not an aftermarket one.

What year car do you have. On my 2011 built 500. I got that same code, 9 years ago. To get a gas cap on a new model, back then. took 2 weeks. The Dealership replaced the cap with 3 new one. Same error pop up, each time. It turned out, I had a bad evap canister.
