Fiat brand April sales numbers are in and show a 45 percent decline compared to the same month last year. In April, Fiat sold a total of 1,404 cars compared to 2,539 last year. Sales of all models except for the 500L MPV were down last month, with 500 hatch and Cabrio models particularly having a rough month. Production of these 500 models ended last September and what was once Fiat's

Why are the 2018s so delayed? Was FCA thinking about pulling Fiat out of the US market and then decided to try one last time with a turbo engine in all trim levels?

Not having inventory may permanently hurt Fiat by folks not going back in to the showrooms when the 2018s do arrive. Like I mentioned in another post, when Fiat is bringing the 2018 500s to market, other makes will be rolling out or very close to rolling out their 2019 offerings.

On another note, my local Studio flips a lot of used Fiat 500 models and I consistently see more of them on the road where I reside. I hope that these buyers will like the product and return to buy newer models and recommend the brand to friends. Let's see what happens...

The official reason for shutting down production and the wait was retooling the factory for the mandated FMVSS changes. Speculating, you could also imagine they were waiting on suppliers. NAFTA issues may also come into play. The 500 is at the bottom of the pile at Toluca with the Jeep Compass and Dodge Journey taking priority. The Compass and Journey both sold 11,500+ units last month.

Sounds like the decrease in sales is in part to the manufacturing plant not being able to handle regulation changes quickly. It also doesn’t help that more reputable model vehicles are built there as well.

Exactly- the redesigned Compass sold over 43,000 units in just the first three months of this year.... it's a hit and no doubt takes production priority. Still I remain hopeful long term about FIAT, in fact I see a new opportunity with GM and Ford pulling out of automobiles.

I hope that these buyers will like the product and return to buy newer models and recommend the brand to friends.
... that is my hope as well and I think it's starting to happen- I see a lot more FIAT's in my neck of the woods; for a long time I was about the only one. And to a person, every owner I talked to loved their FIAT. Gas prices are rising and the choice of affordable, fun cars is slimmer than ever- this could turn into FIAT's time.

Ouch! The 500L is still being imported from Europe right?

My guess would be that the new 2018s coming our way need some extra promotional boost thru national advertising, whether or not the Charlie Sheen and Pit Bull type funny FIAT ads helped sales or not I don't know, but it sure sounds like it would help.

Good point about Ford dropping all cars but the Mustang, all those Fiesta and Focus and Taurus folks will have to go to another brand somewhere unless they all buy Ford SUVs.

Trouble is the market is a moving target and it moves fast- today trucks and SUV's/CUV's are the rage but who is to say that it couldn't come full circle and it's quite possible if there's a slowing economy and high fuel prices. People may well migrate back to much less expensive (last year iirc the average U.S. auto transaction price was over $30,000) and much more fuel efficient autos. Ford could easily spend a year or too ditching cars only to come and find out they had it right to begin with.

The thing is with all these massive regulations coming that is going to cost tons of money. Only the most financially stable and profitable will survive. These companies need to make money. It is thought that there may only be one or two Japanese car companies left when the dust settles. Remember, it is said to cost upwards of $1 billion to develop a platform and they need to sell a million of something to make money. They days when Fiat lost money on every X1/9 and still kept it in production for 10 + years are over.
