Can somebody with a sunroof tell me if this is normal?

Hi all - I just picked up my new (used) 2014 500e and noticed these weird cracks along the sunroof roof rails when the sunroof is open. It opened and closed fine when I first inspected it, but recently when I tried to close it, it stopped as if something were blocking it, that's when I noticed all these little cracks. This isn't normal, is it? (Assuming it IS abnormal, I need to get it over to Fiat ASAP since the normal warranty runs out in a few weeks.)

Also very odd both sides are exhibiting this.

    Thanks!

Definitely not normal. Make an appointment at the dealer to get it checked out.

Exactly right. They need to replace the rails.

Thanks! Made an appointment for this morning with the local service folks who confirmed that so long as the issue is documented before warranty expiration, they'll cover it. (I have no need for a sunroof as it's snowing right now, but I can imagine this would be a costly fix out-of-warranty.)

I can't imagine this wouldn't be covered under warranty, but we'll see what they say.

    Success!

It took them a bit of time since they don't deal with the "e" variant and had to get permission to file the warranty claim from corporate [somewhere], but they agreed this is abnormal and have logged the case and ordered the respective rails and related parts, and will cover everything under the 4 year warranty. Just in under the wire! (Car is otherwise GREAT!)

Wonder what caused it though ?

    Related horror story here:

Had a Mercedes 500 years back that had to have sunroof work done. Took to the dealer in Florida where we lived then. When we went to pick it up, we were greeted quickly by the svc manager who said there had been a problem that they just noticed, and they would need to keep the car for another 3-4 days to fix. Didnt even want us to see the car.

We insisted on seeing the "problem". Well, there were 8 screws driven up through the roof sheet metal about an inch...

Tech had lost the screws he took out, so grabbed some others, not noticing they were an inch and a half longer....

Sorry but that's kinda funny. I'm sure at the time it wasn't.

I was asked once, knowing what I know now about my inlaws, if I would do it all over again. I said "no, I would have married an orphan."

Yeah, at the time, I wasnt my normal happy-go-lucky hippie self. More like a pissed off ex-wife at an alimony hearing.

Now, my heart hurts for that poor tech having to explain to his boss how bad he screwed up a $90k car....

Let's be honest. It was a $70,000 car by the time he was done with it.
