Both Ferrari and Mercedes unveiled their cars today, so things are moving and it finally feels like the season will start soon (in another month). No surprise, the Ferrari is red! McLaren will show their car tomorrow, but a sneaked photo from the Barcelona airport showed the car being unloaded when the wind blew the cover up, so it certainly will have a lot of orange or McLaren Papaya this year! Toro Rosso's car was spied on track the other day, but their official unveiling is Monday, along with Force India, both on the first day of testing.

First 4 days of testing kicks off tomorrow in Barcelona, I haven't seen anything indicating it would be on TV in the US, but most likely there will be live updates on the BBC sports website, and maybe the official Formula 1 page too. As far as we know everyone will be ready to roll tomorrow, even the Honda motor in the Toro Rosso cars apparently lasted during a filming day, so maybe they've got it sorted out after three bad years with McLaren. The testing times don't really reveal everything we'd like, since we typically don't know if the cars are running how they will race, might be light on fuel to go a bit faster, and plenty of other variables. The one variable that seems pretty important is getting in lots of miles with minimal engine and chassis issues, so I'm looking to see how each engine does overall.

    ENGINE TEAMS
    Mercedes: Mercedes, Force India, Williams
    Ferrari: Ferrari, Haas, Sauber
    Renault: Renault, Red Bull, McLaren
    Honda: Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso with those Honda/Mugen engines. There have been positive initial reports, but time will be the true judge. It comes down to Honda/Mugen settling on a generation or two and performing small/simple tweaks. They're doomed if Honda/Mugen doesn't stick to more conservative plan.

I'm most interested in the return of Alfa Romeo. Will they do what Honda/Mugen did and try to rush things or will they be more patient and let the improvements happen organically? They are powering Sauber, still, aren't they? Nixon has Ferrari listed.

I'd like to see Renault do better this season... in Renaults as well as do in RBs. 'Fingers crossed for McLaren too.

I'm not commenting on the MB-powered teams. Ferrari will likely hold their own.

I wish Haas could team with Ford in F1... that would be so cool.

Does anyone have any top tips in this department? I'd love to follow F1 and WRC but readily accessible US broadcasts of races seem to be stuck behind specialty cable package paywalls or pay to play streaming services that don't play well with my home media. Frustrating to say the least.

    Ando,
Formula 1 just announced their new F1 package that will show all races, all practices, and give us choices on different TV angles too. Only downside is that it will be 8-12 bucks a month, more info to come. The regular F1 broadcasts in the US will be on ESPN and ABC, so I hope you get those channels if you didn't get NBCSN in the past. More info on the announcement on the official Formula 1 website today.

    Amacento,
The Sauber deal (as far as I know) is as primary sponsor, so the team will be named Alfa Romeo Sauber to help promote the brand world wide, which is big goal for the FCA folks. They're using Ferrari engines just like Ferrari and Haas. Sort of like Red Bull's Renault engines that are badged TAG-Heur or whatever.

Good news: FERRARI goes fastest on day two, just a few tenths faster than Red Bull went on day 1, so considering it was cold and ended up snowing today in Barcelona, that's pretty awesome! On the other hand, testing is just testing, so hopefully we get warm weather and more info next week, sounds like the next 2 days of practice will also be chilly and wet.

Bad news: Haas was slowest on day 2, not sure if they had issues or not. McLaren had a small issue with some clip on an exhaust line coming loose, and damaging some of the wiring and the engine cover, so they only racked up about 37 miles today, compared to Vettel with 98.

Day THREE: Snow, Rain, almost no laps, basically nothing learned! Alonso was the only car to even set a time, but in the chilly rain it was about a minute off the previous two days, so look for some better running tomorrow.

DAY FOUR: Hamilton fastest, with McLaren and Ferrari not far behind, followed by HAAS!

So, after the first four days we mostly had a lot of rain and snow, with the top three engine makers piling up similar mileage, and Honda's sole team Toro Rosso getting the MOST laps of any team, so just maybe Honda has fixed their last three years of issues.

Next week should be better weather, so by the end of those 4 days testing I think we'll have a better idea of who is fastest. So far it just might give us the 4-5 team battle at the top that we've totally been missing for a long time.

Real question ... when will Codemasters update / release the new cars and drivers for F1 video game on Xbox? I need to defend my world championship for last year racing with Toro Rosso.

I just have the PC versions of their game, I don't think they update cars once they release the game every year.

Final day of testing yesterday had Ferrari fastest and somehow Alonso was 2nd fastest with a quick lap at the end of the day. Two weeks to go til the first race!
