Our Rx400h went through another 12V battery after 37 months on a 36 month pro-rated battery from AAA (sigh). I'm going with the less expensive Interstate battery from Costco with a 48 month warranty. My wife put the key in and the car failed to "Ready." I took a multimeter and measure 10.5V at the battery terminals. I slapped our trickle charger on for a few hours and measured 13.8V while on the the charger. After 4 hours off the charger, the voltage dropped to 12.2V. I got the car to "Ready" and measured the terminals at 14.0V and ran some errands. I shut the car off and immediately got 12.8V at the terminals last night. Tested the battery 12 hours later and it's back down to 10.8V...it's toast.

This got me thinking about our 500e. We've had the car for 21 months/36K miles and have yet to replace the 12V battery. I measured the voltage at 12.4V with the car off, then 14.4V with car on "Ready." Does anyone know the threshold voltage that is needed to keep the computers running? I had no idea the car had a 12V battery warning indictor...I wish the Lexus had that.

I don't know about what an EV requires, but your battery at 12.4 volts needs to be charge. A fully charged battery is around 12.6 -12.9 volts. Batteries that sit 90 % discharged or under, may start to sulfate and deteriorate. In my experience, starting a car with a gasoline engine could bring the battery down to 9-10 volts under starter load. Cars without a working charging system will typically quit around 8 volts.

12.4V immediately after shutting the car off definitely indicates its on its way out. It may work for some time yet, but 12.8V is more along the lines of what I would expect to see on a battery that just came off of charge recently. All the 12V battery has to do to get the car up and running is run the 12V system which includes computers and turn on the contactor coils for the main high voltage contactors. Once those are closed the DC/DC converter takes over the duties for the low voltage system.

The bigger job of the 12V battery is when the car is off to keep all the computers running in their lower power modes. It has to keep memory going in the radio, the telemetry system is always running (even though we can't use it once the 3 year trial is up), etc.. When a lead acid battery sits partially charged for a period of time it is not good for it. We have this in all cars made today. In general the more goodies the car has the harder it is on the 12V battery. Lead acid batteries are disposable things. You could swap it out for a lithium battery which does not mind the constant partial state of charge, but they cost significantly more.

Under normal circumstances Fiat 500e displays warning to replace 12V battery. But this is not very reliable. Sometimes battery just denies to power up HV contractors needed to start DC/DC voltage converter.
Unlike Administrator assumes, this EV will fail to power up if voltage drops below ~ 10V.

I had a same warning message and couldn't start the car and I contacted Fiat road assistance service and tow truck guy jump started the 12v battery and I drove to the dealer and replaced the battery for free. Mine is 2015 and 13k on it.

Mine never once gave me any warning for the 12V. I left town for something like three or four days, came back and the car wouldn't start. It was the original 12V battery at about 4.5 years old though so this was not a huge surprise to me. The car was plugged in the whole time I was gone also so it had every opportunity to try and save itself, but all well.

The "Duracell" AGM I bought at Sams Club has been working without issue ever since. I picked it because it was 1 available that evening, and 2 has a three year free replacement warranty.

Autozone replacement. Exactly the same size and specs.

    Worked great.

Thanks to CriticalMass for help pointing me to H5 size class.
