12 Volt Replacement Battery for 500e

    Hi,

I have recently received the "Final Warning" indicator regarding the 12 Volt Battery. I have tried to reboot once and was able to get rid of the warning. The warning has returned after one trip. I will attempt to reboot again. The car is 2015 with less than 14K miles located in Phoenix, AZ. I spoke with the only dealership that works with 500e's in my area and they told me that all the open recalls had been completed on my previous visits. They seem to be all software related. Assuming I need to replace the 12-volt battery can one be purchased at a local Autozone, O'Reilly's or Walmart? When I search Autozones website for a 500e no parts are available for it. Does the 500e take the same battery as 500? Any suggestions on where I should buy a replacement battery?

FYI. I just replaced the battery with Everstart MAXX-H5 from Walmart. This battery is essentially identical.

Does the 4yr 48k warranty cover the 12V battery? Or at least pro-rated? I'm not sure that it would be excluded or not as a wear item, but I recently had Bill Luke Fiat replace a surprisingly large number of things on mine when I went in with a laundry list of things that were broken or sort of broken on my 2014 that goes out of warranty in January.

In the Fiat/Mopar parts catalog, the 500e and the gas Fiat 500 models have the 12V battery part number. If the auto parts store doesn't list the 500e, look up the battery for a gas 500 model and it will be compatible. So did the new battery solve your problems?

Yes. I had the original battery charged and test by AutoZone. It turns out it was, in fact, a bad battery. Thus far the car is running fine and all faults have cleared.

It is nice that they put in a warning message for the 12V battery. You don't have the normal hints that the 12V battery is dying in an EV such as weak engine crank. I know on the old 90's GM EV's when the 12V battery started dying the vehicles would automatically sense the voltage drop on the 12V and turn on the DC/DC converter to try and keep it alive. This would in turn end up draining the main pack fairly significantly.

Speaking of which I do seem to be noticing a few percent drop in the batteries state of charge after sitting overnight so it's probably time to check my original 12V as my car was originally delivered in December of 2013 so it's probably due for replacement.

I did the same. Fits and works great. As for warranty coverage, the dealer required me to bring the vehicle there to test it and is generally confused about how to service a 500e. The walmart battery was cheap and I knew it was the problem so I just replaced it outright...

While no crank, I'd expect the power window motors to get a little slow. The 12V battery on our Lexus Rx400h seems to need replacing every 3-4 years. The car will no longer start (Ready) when the voltage drops below 10.5V. Cranking amps aren't vital on these cars, but voltage and current is important to power the computers. I assume the 500e is similar and I'd be curious if you could run a multimeter on the bad battery to read the voltage.

New member so please be gentle.

Can someone verify, as I'm actively looking for a 14-15 model. I have read that voltage should be approx 12.4 on the terminals when car is off, and approx 15-15.5v when charging to show it is receiving charge from the DC converter. Is this correct?

I don't mind replacing an old battery, but want to make sure the expensive stuff is functioning correctly during my search.

    Cheers and thanks,

Trust me, any Lexus will need a new battery every two or three years, or at least they do here in Phoenix. They are known to eat starter batteries. My mom has had two brand new RX's and both had several batteries put in under the four year warranty.

My point about cranking was that on a gas car you would have the audible indication of a battery on its way out from a weak engine crank so you usually have a few days warning anyway before it will leave you stranded. We don't have that luxury on the Fiat. I'm opting to go until I get the apparent warning of the weak 12V. We have overkill for a 12V battery anyway. 10.5V is considered fully discharged on a lead acid battery.
