    Fiat 500E Regenerative Braking Issue

    Hello Everyone,

I bought a used 2014 Fiat500e in march 2017 and have noticed that once in a while when I start the car, a message appears saying to service regenerative braking along with the flashing RBS sign.
Other than the flashing of the message and the icon, no warning message is stored.

I took it to a dealer (Southern California) and they couldn't get the message to appear on the screen. Infact it is one of the technicians who told me to get a video of the message and show it to them. But still, since no message is stored in the car and they can't produce it themselves when they turn on the car (because the appearance of the message is very random about once every 500 miles), they said I may have to leave the car with them so they can see it closely.

I was wondering whether anyone of you has gotten the message and what I should do about it?

I use it daily for a 55 mile round trip to work and other than this message appearing, the car has been great. Infact I don't see anything wrong with Regenerative Braking either.

Attached is a video that shows the appearance of the message to "Service Regenerative Braking" and flashing of the RBS icon along with the proof no “warning message” is stored in the car.

    Thank you

It's possible the ABS / RBS computer is taking a moment to boot up, and the cluster isn't seeing it... so it shows the warning. Then when the ABS computer comes online, the warning clears.

Showing them that video should help.

Are you having an issue with the brakes "grabbing" as you roll to a stop?

No issue with the brakes at all.
This message only shows up (randomly) once or twice a month when I start up the car.

Based on experience, I don't think it's a big issue at all. I'm still driving the car and have driven 10000 miles since the starting of this thread.
Most importantly, haven't noticed any issue with the regenerative breaking system or the range at all.

So I've learned to just ignore it for the time being.
If there are any new updates, will definitely let the forum know.

    Thanks for the question though.

I just crossed the 51K mile mark on my 2015 500e and just noticed a new issue with the regen braking system. This is *not* the grabbing issue discussed in other threads that occurs just before coming to a stop (I chalk this up to cold, damp discs since it usually only happens in the morning at my first full stop event).
This new issue typically happens when i am coming off the freeway and braking very lightly before i reach the intersection. I get the feeling of switching between regen and friction braking for 0.5 second and back to regen. This can occur several times before reaching a full stop. There are no lamps or fault codes indicating a problem with the system. I even have the Konnwei KW903 OBD tool and the AlfaOBD app and i don't see any issues.
I live in NC and the dealership here does not have techs that are qualified to service the HV system so i wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this phenomenon. Thanks.

I experienced this for the first time about a month ago with 65K miles on our 2013. The car would switch back and forth between regen and friction brakes, ultimately stopping with full friction. I use the power display on the cluster so I could see what's going on. I'd lightly press the brakes at 40mph and see -6kW, -12kW, -15kW, then -3kW. I'd be at about 32mph and see 0kW requiring a little more brake force for the friction system. This went on for a few applications, but hasn't been an issue since that day.

Do any of you get a surging like feel while lightly braking (on regen only)? My 2014 has occasionally gotten this little but, but never the service regen braking system error aside from one time I tried doing a burn out without turing the ESC off, but it went away on its own. Cycling the key off and back on always cures the surging issue and I usually do it at the next stop light.

I’m having a weird issue! Thinking it is the braking system but not sure. I noticed when I put the car in park the motor is still running as if it is still in gear. It has done this before and I added brake fluid as it was low but not registering on the dash. So now the fluid is full and it only does it if the car is on and shifted from R or D to P then the motor is running, if ya just turn the key when ya get in for the “Ready” on the dash it does not do it until it is in gear to park! Any idea what it could be?

What do you mean by "the motor is still running"? Is the car still trying to move away, or do you mean you are hearing a motor running?
