I built a 3D printed, automated car navigation out of an old Android phone

I posted this project build over at Reddit but not sure if linking externally is allowed.

We all know how terrible 500e's navigation is, so I built a better one from scratch

    End result:

Frame: drawn in SolidWorks, 3D printed in ABS plastic and hand shaped/painted to match.
    Phone: Google Nexus 5
    Software mods:
    • Android 6.0.1 factory image (for xposed module because status unknown on 7.0+)
    • TWRP recovery + root
    • xposed modules: GravityBoxAdaway
    • Launcher: Nova Launcher Prime to remove everything from home page, gestures, and home screen style
    • Icons: self built widgets using KWGT Pro, condition based trigger linked to Tasker
    • stripped out a bunch of Android services with Titanium Backup Pro
    • other stuff that I can't remember at this point

I have a Nexus 5 sitting collecting dust....

If I didn't already have a double DIN installed, I'd ask you how much to print one of those for me.

I find this to look and be extremely impressive and far better than pretty much any other solution I have seen to date.

I have a couple spare phones and couldn't think of a better use but they don't have service sadly.

Love to know more on how it is attached/mounted as it looks like it might use the CD slot. I use a magnet mount in the CD slot currently for my main phone but again this is to me a very nicely done job I'd love to have myself.

Just not so 100% sure about the software requirements and configurations (although I am sure I could figure it out). Maybe you should consider creating a DIY "kit" of sorts, likely many would want it since it is a nice improvement/upgrade.

Thanks for the kind words Tweak. I did look at all the available options and none were exactly what I was looking for.

This was a month-long build and required tons of irreversible cutting, sanding, gluing, painting, wiring, automation programming, and Android modification; far too much to be offered as a kit solution.
If you look though my Imgur album (http://imgur.com/a/lfN50), I did narrate all 150+ pictures with descriptions of each step.

Looks like a couple hours tops ....

    j/k

Now if someone could make a double DIN kit 3d printer pattern that works with 178mm faceplaces instead of the 173mm that Scosche sells that would be great... dremelled mine to hell to make my Android chinese HU fit. Gonna have to build it back up this summer with Epoxy and make it look nice.

    You're welcome!

I didn't realize how extensive a project it is, I do prefer when things are easily reversible.
