    Ohio's Cousin to "The Dragon"

I just recently learned of a stretch of roadway 12 miles long in Southeast Ohio that is similar to "The Tail of the Dragon" in TN & NC.

I am thinking of looking for some more fun roadways in the Hocking Hills Region and maybe making a day trip of it. From what I have heard, there are some FUN roads in that part of our state, so it shouldn't be hard to put together a day drive.

Anybody interested in Joining me can post below "I'm Interested!" The last Saturday of May, the 27th, is the only weekend available for me until mid-summer, so that is the day I am going to go. I should also say, though it should be obvious, this is just me going for a drive in Southeast Ohio and inviting any of you who want to join me to do so. This will not be an organized event like "FOTD" is. It may become that in the future (I am thinking it would be a LOT of fun in the fall), but this initial drive will be just that, a Saturday Drive.

I am in the Columbus area, but we could pick a place to meet up if people from other parts of the state are interested in joining me.

I am going to post this on multiple forums, just to get more exposure.

Hocking Hills is pretty great driving country. Also look up the "triple nickel" out east.

That said, May 27th is the final weekend I'll have to finish the race car for the next autocross event, so I'm expecting to be covered in grease all day

I just put together a tentative map for the day plotting out the "Top 5 Drives" of Southestern Ohio that I found on MotorcycleRoads.com. One of those is the "Triple Nickel". Doing all five of them, including traversing between them, is 256.4 miles and will take ~6.5 hours. So, getting there, doing the drive and then getting home will most certainly be a two tank affair and almost 11 hours of driving. I figure another 60-90 minutes for lunch and fuel and it will be a FULL day.

I have laid out a tentative route that will cover the top 5 fun routes to ride according to MotorCycleRoads.com, and in the traversing from one to the next, we will hit portions of other rides that fall further down the list. Trying to get the top 5 all in one ride makes for about a 7 hour drive. With an hour and a half to and from for me (and longer for some others) I am trying to keep it no longer than that. Add an hour for lunch and fuel in the middle of the day, and it will easily be a 12 hour day or longer for some of us. Which is why I am also trying to lay it out in such a way that midway through the day, our mid day stop could be a place convenient for people to head home mid day or join in mid day.

I am creating a Google Map with the various routes we will drive, and I will put together "May 27 Drive Part 1" and "Part 2" maps once I have identified a good place to eat lunch. I will, of course, share links and make them available as soon as I have them nearly complete.

Here is the link to a Google map that includes the top 5 rides in Ohio, and a tentative map for a Fun Drive on May 27. It is in two parts, the first being about 2 hours, 45 minutes and the second being about 3 hours, 45 minutes. The first part begins at a bar and grill south of Zanesville and ends at a restaurant in Caldwell, OH. The second part starts at that same restaurant and coincidentally ends at another restaurant at the next exit up the main highway. (Of course, I don't plan on driving two miles up Hwy 77, I plan to drive 146 miles...

I will gauge interest as we get closer. So far, it looks like we might have 3 or 4 people interested. My son might be interested in joining us, though he drives a Focus ST...

Starting in Zanesville is convenient, as its the closest point to where I'd be coming from. Only 3 hours to get there. Long, but not unmanageable.

My son is coming from Akron, and I think he is planning to go down on Friday and grab a BNB or hotel room for Friday night. This one is on the far side of how far (or rather how long) I'll drive in one day.

I did a bike ride in NE Ohio last weekend and getting there was fun... In fact, coming home, I turned off the GPS and just randomly headed SW toward home. I drove a lot of fun roads in that two hours. My next trip, probably in the fall, will be NE Ohio which will be closer for you...

So what is this road called, I've heard of the Triple Nickel, need to hit that one at some point. My late Dad and I used to take backroads when going to WV from Michigan. IIRC the city was Marietta and then we crossed a bridge to get into WV and then got onto route 50 over there and it was pretty good.
