DIY Blacked Out Headlights

I saw the Blacked Out Headlights at the Fiat on the Dragon this past weekend and I LOVE them, but the pricing is rather steep... The thing I like most about them is that, unlike other "smoked headlights", the reflector is smoked, the lens itself if still clear. My biggest "hesitancy" about the whole tinted headlight look is that of reducing the light output by blocking light to get the blacked out look. The blacked out fiat headlights are very unique in that the lens is still clear.

I had already decided that I am going to put halos in my headlights for no other reason that I love the look. Since I have to take the headlight apart to put the halo in, I am thinking that while it is apart, I could simply paint the interior reflector with spray tint instead of tinting the lens itself. I plan to change headlights to LED or HID at the same time which will run cooler than stock headlights, not that I imagine heat is an issue for the spray tint, but I don't know...

Has anybody done something similar? Is there any reason NOT to do it that I am not thinking of?

I'll admit, I am a little surprised there are no opinions on this. It seems everyone loves the blackened headlight look, so I am surprised the crickets are chirping....

But, I won't be the first to do this! I found this blog post where Crow Concepts did something very similar, though they apparently used a black matte paint and did some RED highlighting, which I like a lot, but bottom line, I think I am going to give this a shot... I will do one at a time and if I wind up screwing it up and it looks horrible, I'll only have to buy one replacement headlamp assembly.

I admit to being 1 of the 100! I'd love to have those demon eye halos on mine but think I would mess something up doing it myself. Good luck though & please post your results and I promise to not be a cricket. lol

Last night there was an accident at the entrance to our subdivision. Nobody was hurt, but when cleaning up, they missed a piece from a front end...



A headlight!! Now I can test my concept for the price of the Tinting paint. I can always paint the chrome a flat black like the one linked above, but I really want a darker chrome finish, not a flat black. I'll probably do flat black if the chrome look doesn't shine through the tint paint, but now I'll know before I subject my Fiat lens to the treatment!

I checked the local yards. Only one has any Fiat 500s and he said he didn't have headlights available. That yard isn't a "Pick and Pull" either. They strip 'em, store the parts they salvage and crush 'em. One guy checked his network, but he wanted $220. I could buy the black ones for $260! So, I'll make do with the gift from the accident... It'll at least give me an idea of whether or not tinting that chrome will result in a "black chrome" look which is what I am really after. If not, flat black or dark grey with the red accents it will be...

Thanks NGEN... I thought about that, but honestly wasn't sure it would adhere well to plastic. Glad to here it will! I certainly won't have to worry about heat using an engine paint!
