    Need replacement Level 1 charger

    All -
It looks like my factory Level 1 charger is no longer working. I plug it in, and get a one or two blinks from a green light, but then no lights. Plugging it into the car results in two orange LEDs on the dash (at opposite ends), and an error condition on the instruments. The car charges fine at a public station.

I've seen posts that the unit can be picky about grounds - I will try to take the car and charger to another location to check that.

But - to my question - the replacement charger is $850 from Fiat. I see some used ones occasionally pop up. But this seems to be a more or less standard Intertek part - 4000982. Could I possibly use a Level 1 charger from another EV, like a Volt, or the like?

    tia!

Yes. I wouldn't pay a premium for a Fiat brand on my charging plug. The J1772 connector is pretty much universal, though some folks think the charger receptacle from different manufacturers might be slightly different (i.e a Ford receptacle might be a few microns larger than a GM or Fiat). It's just a theory on the Nissan Leaf forums when the realization that some public plugs are getting a little loose from the diversity of different makes and models being charged. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I also wouldn't spend more than $200 on a level 1 EVSE. Check out eBay or your local craigslist. I'm sure there's a bunch on there.

I would make sure to test your EVSE at another location, it might be a grounding issue with your garage.

    Joe,

There are plenty of used options available on eBay and the like, as maximizese pointed out. My roommate purchased a L2 Clipper Creek EVSE for his LEAF for about $240 from eBay and we've both seen plenty of L1 EVSEs for similar prices.

I just picked up a Juicebox Pro 40 L2 EVSE from Amazon and have been very happy with it. Fully charging the car in under four hours is awesome.

I just purchased one of these. Should have it in a week.

    I got this set up
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Level-2-Elec...xYeuBe&vxp=mtr
It works really well, I have had a few months, I use it every day, It charges fast, especially if you can add to 20amp 220V plug, but it has the adapter for a standard 110V and I believe that the 110V even charges faster than the factory cord.
The charge cable seems well made, has a spot for a lock on the handle, has a rubber cover to protect the end when not in use, the bag is nice, but I never use it because I have to use the cord too much to need it, the adapter is nice and well made.

The gauge on the wire looks too low to support 20Amp. Don't overcharge it or it will cause a fire.

Im not sure how you are seeing the gauge of the wire. It seems to do great with 20amp 220, not 40amp 220
20 amp circuit typically calls for 12 gauge wire, the rest is insulation or overkill. I have never noticed any part of the cord get hot.

I have a 20 AMP 240V and the cable is definitely thicker than yours.

    I got this one:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/172508426235...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Although it says 'Level 2', I doubt it will prove to charge much faster when I plug it into the 240v outlet for my drier. Haven't tried it yet - will post results when I do. In the meantime, it works fine as Level 1, and it (and you guys) saved me $600 over getting a new one from Fiat. THANKS!
