So...update. My 500x has been in the shop since Sunday. I was assured many times that the error codes being thrown were not the thermostat, despite telling them on day 1 that it may be the issue. Now, on day 4, the conversation I had started with them saying they were still trying to figure out the problem with the car. At this point I got antsy and contacted the Sales Manager at the dealership to let him know what is going on with the car he just sold me. I then get a call at the end of the day saying that even though none of the codes being thrown were for the thermostat, that the issue is indeed the thermostat. Evidently it will be ready for pickup tomorrow.
They didn't mention anything about the rough shift between 1st and 2nd. I know that he had mentioned they'd be looking into any software updates that need to be done. Am I right in thinking that a recent update addressed the shifting issue?- Top

When the X is cold there is a slow or delayed shift from first to second. That is normal if its what your feeling. It goes away with warm-up. I don't understand the multiple codes but I can believe the thermostat is bad. My theory is the previous owner got a check engine light then cleared the light himself and bought the car in for trade. Once you clear a code for the thermostat it wont come back for a couple of start cycles.
Anyway it will be good to get the car back sans codes and all drive modes working. I just wish someone could make a thermostat that lasts longer than two years.2016 500X Easy,Go pedal, Autoflash, LED Headlights and reverse, LED DRL, carbon fiber shift gate, ST T9 wheels, PIAA wipers, '17 motor mounts, AEM Dryflow- Top

It didn’t have the rough shift between 1-2 during multiple test drives or the day I bought it (all of which were on really cold days). It’s more of a lurch than a delay. Only the morning after the light came on. It also isn’t happening on the 2017 X they gave me as a loaner.
There was 1 previous owner, and it was Enterprise Rent a Car, and it went from them , straight back to the dealer. My guess is the dealer cleared it hoping it wouldn’t come back because they couldn’t figure it out before it sold. I guess I’ll see today.- Top

Sorry for multiple quotes, but I need to comment on each. A bit off topic, though...
cold for me is below 0 deg C. That is below +32 deg F.
You see, we have been dealing with it for a while. It seems like on some days I am thinking of using Lemon Law due to this issue (and the AC smell).
The delay is like 1 second or more. The colder it is, the more rough it gets. Then other gears hang up as well.
When it gets hot (like engine operating temperature) then other gears are OK, but not the 1-2. It is still there.
And the worst is when you are making a turn. Even a slight one.

I tested 2017 AWD Trekking and 2017 FWD Pop (both 2.4, 9spd). FWD was smoooooth, could not even tell the shifts. Cold or hot. AWD was a bit rougher, but nowhere close to our 2016.
Then back to mine - 1-2 long delay and when the 2nd drops in it is like dropping clutch.
To add to it - coasting, like downshifts - on cold, it simply bangs through the gears.
All software is up to date. No solution can be found.

When I purchased mine new it had the harsh shift, I drove mine for a good 10,000 miles like that thinking "thats just the way it is" One day I stopped in the dealer to fix my USB port, the tech says "wow you've never had your vehicle to a dealer since you purchased it" I answered with "yeah, I plan to keep it that way" you wont see me here unless something major happens" LOL Anyhow, they fixed my USB and gave me all the updated software which included the smoother shifting, reduced downshifts all the time and losing the shift indicator. Drives like a champ now!- Top

I do not really think that could have anything to do with shifts, could it?Current rides: 2003 Porsche Boxster, 2019 Chevy Bolt LT, 2016 Audi Q5 Premium

So I just got it back. They replaced the thermostat and the radiator fan as it was found to be shaking. My TCM is updated and I still have my gear indicator. Rough shift is fixed as well. So relieved.
Also, I’m located in New York.👍 1- Top

I think it's a supplier/quality issue with the part itself, not the design. There are no issues with the thermostat on the 1.4 and my roomie has a 2015 Cherokee 2.4 with around 50k and no issues with the thermostat so far (multiple issues with the 9 speed shifter itself as well as occasional rough shifts though).2013 Fiat 500T Rosso

Supplier issues seem like the biggest problem. Supplier issues with with the airbag and TCM on the 500L really screwed that car's launch up.Enjoy the Forum? Tell a Friend and Please Whitelist us on your Ad Blocker. Thx!

I had the same cold idle rumble return after they loaded the PCM and TCM update. Initially blaming the rough cold idle on the software, I then decided to add a 12oz bottle of Techron to a full tank on next fill-up. After using 3/4 tank the rough cold idle is gone. Looks like I had a partially clogged injector. Worth giving it a try.2016 500X Easy,Go pedal, Autoflash, LED Headlights and reverse, LED DRL, carbon fiber shift gate, ST T9 wheels, PIAA wipers, '17 motor mounts, AEM Dryflow👍 1- Top

Well, add another faulty thermostat to this list. My 16 500x displayed all of the symptoms described in this thread. Took it to the dealer today and they confirmed it was a faulty thermostat and gave me a loaner. Luckily, I'm still under warranty but I'm getting concerned about this car.- Top

41,500 miles on my '16 and P0128 "Drive Mode Unavailable" popped up for me too. I take it to the dealer with no appointment hoping for someone to at least look at the car but NO I was turned away and was told to call and make an appointment. So I call them and the earliest schedule time is 3.5 weeks!!! I don't know if anyone else has issues with their Stealership like I do but this is ridiculous 3.5 weeks to even get the car in to be looked at?? The sad part is this is the only Dealer close to me. The next closest is over 1h45m drive. IS this ok to drive on for that long of a period of time? I am concerned about me breaking down on my way to work and loosing a days pay because of this issue.- Top
