Aftermarket wheels and range on 500e

    Hi,

I have searched the forum, but did not find a thread that covered this. Has anyone with aftermarket wheels noticed a significant loss of range on their 500e? I am considering 16" wheels.

    Thanks!

Its going to depend a lot on the weight of the new wheels and the rolling resistance of the new tires. If you go light enough you could potentially improve range.

The inserts on the non sport wheels effected the 500e range by 1% per fiat.

Unless you're barely getting to your destination with stock wheels and tires, I wouldn't worry about aftermarket wheels and tires. Wider sport tires will probably shave off 5-10% fuel economy (it did in my VW TDI). I have 17X8" SSR Integral GT2 (16lbs) with 225/45/17 Hankook V12s. The fuel economy went from 44mpg to 41mpg. I replaced my 5th gear set with a 12% taller set and I'm right back up to 45mpg and the car is much quieter at speeds above 70mph.

Back to the 500e, I personally don't see the need for wider patch tires but we've only had ours for 3 weeks now. I'm not sure if its tire related or just the nature of FWD BEV, but the car feels little squirrelly (at times) on the freeway at speeds above 50mph. I don't know if it's the thin tires, thread pattern not complying with the rain grooves of the pavement, the torque distribution of the powertrain, or the steering, but I know the wheels are aligned and balanced.

I'm highly interested in finding some lightweight wheels but not for the $2k price tag I see on some of these, geez! Where do you get these "wobble bolts" they talk about to use 4 x 100mm ones instead of 98mm?

Most of our vendors sell wobble bolts. Just look on their websites or ask them.

Go to Google or eBay and search "fiat 500 wobble bolt". It's that simple. Multiple vendors will be returned.

I just purchased a set of 16" Abarth wheels for the 500e, I'll let you know when they are mounted.

No noticeable decrease in range with mine, and I have a "control" in the garage to compare to. Another 500e.

So I just put my Abarth 16" wheels on this afternoon (LOVE THEM!). I had borrowed a shipping scale from work to weigh the old and new wheels, but it was a little more difficult than I expected, and I was trying to finish up before it got dark, but it looks like the Abarth is about 3-4 pounds lighter than the 500e wheels.
