Attachment or thumbnail: How to make pics look smaller?

Is there a way to make the attachments/pictures as thumbnails in the text as opposed to so large pics that take the whole width of the window? It makes the whole post not really helpful.

Is there an example of the picture looking too big? Is there also an example of what you would like? Let me know.

You can resize you images and upload whatever size you want. I like big images, so I resize them accordingly. 650 px width is good. The issue is not to upload a huge file size as that can slow the site down and it will eventually eat into the upload quota everyone has.

I do resize them before upload.
I am just thinking the site/software does what it is designed to do.

    I don't think I understand.

The first link looks like what our forum does when you post an Image link:

The second link looks like what is posted when you upload an image file to the site and that leaves a smaller attachment image that you can click on. I also uploaded the profile view of the car like that.

Which one is the one you prefer?

Personally I like the large images so I can be seen more easily, so that is with an image link. However, if a link is used it is important to make sure the box that say "reference locally" is checked (that's the default) so a copy is saved on our site. If that isn't done, if the linked image is moved or taken down, the forum image disappears and then an entire thread can become meaningless.

This is what that looks like below. It also leaves a smaller attachment image, too.

All the pictures I put into the forum are saved locally, within the forum. I personally do not like external sources due to issues at some later time - I move pictures, change subscription, and all the images are gone rendering the thread useless.

So, having said that I resize the images down to about 2600 pixels. Then insert them inline.
From what I see in your post looks like the forum's engine will resize image that was inserted inline so that it fits the frame (screen size, or text window size). When I click on Abarth-snow attachment it has same size in text as in the attachment.
This is what I want to avoid.

Let me put it this way.

Think of the thread I wrote.

I uploaded images that are 2600x1463. Originally they were 4160x3120. I refer to them in the text, so I want them to display inline, after the text they were mentioned.
I can easily move them within the text and they will be anchored as I need. That is great so far.
Being attachments, they will be displayed at the bottom of the post in form of small previews (thumbnails). All good.
However, when I publish the post, the pictures within text will be very large size. They will occupy almost all width of the window. I would rather, instead, have them to be, let's say 600 pixels in the text, as a preview. If the reader needs more detailed view, one can click on the thumbnail and view the full size image.

    So in short.
Attachment is 2600x1463. In line (in text) I want it to be displayed as 600x338.

On THIS forum ONLY (I am on ten others) pictures MAY post as HUGE or an attachement, correct orientation OR sideways.
There is no rhyme or reason. ONLY this site.

PS I only use my iPhone 6.

    Tests

So here are a few tests.
    Image sizes are as follows:

    4160x2340

    3200x1800

    1600x900

    800x450

    400x225

So look on them from the top.

I want the maximum, original, resolution to display as the one on the very bottom.
It cannot be accomplished without resizing the image in the first place.

    Do one more thing.

Go from full screen into "restore window", if PC. You will see how the pictures fill the text window.

I have the same problem of my pictures posting too big, and I don't know how to post a thumbnail or a smaller picture. I feel awkward taking up so much space on the page. The thumbnails you posted above show up as all the same size on my screen except for the 400x225 which is smaller than the first four. When I look at the albums, almost all of those pictures take up the whole width of the page. It's not like I post a whole lot of pictures, but I'd like to post thumbnails. Thanks.

Thank you all for the input. Having the larger images displayed inline and not having to click on them makes for, in my opinion, an easier viewing experience. Clicking on the thumbnails is also problematical because they do not display correctly on phones. An interesting tidbit that could be offered as proof that larger images are prefered over thumbnails is that everyone who has won The Ride of The Month Contest has posted large, inline images. People that post thumbnails in the contest haven't won as far as I remember.

Like many thousands of forums, I use standard vBulletin software and the image settings are mostly left on default other than allowing larger attachment quotas for members so people can post more images. The odds that this is the only forum out there that does images like this is not likely. Still, I'm always looking to make things better and in particular, the sideways image issue is one of the big priorities.

As far as the images being too large, I found a setting and will reduce the size to probably around 900 px width we will see if that helps. That is the largest that will fit comfortably in a post. Hopefully the thumbnails will display the larger image. Anything larger than ~ 1024 is generally a waste, though and will start to eat into one's attachment quota.

For those who like smaller images, here is a post I found that has small thumbnails that blow up to larger images : http://www.fiat500usaforum.com/showt...l=1#post787615

Here is a post with large inline images. I think not having to click thumbnails and being able to read the captions makes this post easy to read. The large images also allow posting ads that have small writing. The only thing I would do differently is to make sure the images are referenced locally.
