So apparently it was the shifter shaft seal and some hose that was leaking and not the rear main. Too bad they closed their garage door on my roof while I was pulling into the building. Not happy right now. Was quoted $2200 to replace the roof panel, antenna, and spoiler from two shops. Not horrible I guess, but

Got my car back the other day with a new roof Turns out I was right that it was gear oil and not motor oil. The transmission end cover was leaking. A new gasket was installed and we're good to go. The mechanic also found that the upper radiator hose was leaking, something I wasn't even aware of. That's likely where the burning smell was coming from the whole time. Thank god it wasn't the rear main seal.
