New turbo, now I got too much boost.

    Hi All,

I recently got the turbo assembly replaced on my late 2013 Abarth as it was low on power and giving an underboost CEL code.

Now i got the new turbo installed, but now it's showing way too much boost, even on regular mode. I got the new Honeywell Turbo.

In regular mode I have seen the boost gauge go up to 24 and settle at 18 PSI.

In sport mode, it does the same. It is pulling great, however under WOT acceleration, the boost spikes and releases several times, specially in second and 3rd gear.

I made a video where you can see the boost needle go like crazy (ESC and traction control were fully off, Sport on). You can hear the engine sound changing with the boost too.

I'm taking the car back to the dealer, but If I can point them in the right direction, it would speed the process.

    Thank you very much!

    Thanks for the reply!

I'll hope I will be able to convince the service guy there is a problem, their answer is always, it's a new part with a different number, that is normal.

    Everything is normal to them.

    Any other possible causes?

Generally, incorrect/poor wastegate signal connections will cause overboost. It's really weird that the pressure is jumping like that. I don't think they'd consider that normal.

Just as a tip in general, if the dealer ever says anything is normal, and you *know* it's not, ask to compare it to a new vehicle.

Just a small update to this issue.

After a week of driving the car, the spikes ceased without taking any correction. Seems the ECU needed to calibrate itself to the new turbo, assembly.

Over a month has passed and the car is running well and no issues with the new turbo.

    Thanks to all who replied.

Interesting, I have the same issue. Replaced turbo last Monday and at WOT or sudden gas pedal load boost will spike at 24 like in the video and bounce. I need to do a final boost leak this weekend still. Checked wastegate solenoid for leaks, nothing, diverter valve plate installed, nothing, inspected and cleaned sensors, nothing, visually inspected all intercooler piping connections and nothing. I tried to run a boost leak test but no success since cap was made from a weak material and kept coming out after 15 to 18psi, but ran smoke test and nothing. I’m suspecting if is not a boost leak, maybe a faulty wastegate solenoid?

Did you disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the ECU calibration?

Yes, actually I had it disconnected while doing the turbo repair . Tomorrow I’m running the final boost leak test, I’ll post the results by then. I’m trying not to throw parts in just to try to fix it but I’m running out of ideas and more so that is not giving me any check engine light, that could be a good lead but I don’t know what is going on. Next things I’m planning to install/replace just if I don’t see anything on the boost leak test is FMIC EC(because I don’t trust in the factory charge pipe connection) + wastegate solenoid and boost sensor. By the way, car has only RRM intake, bought it with that already installed, looking to switch with a V4 in the near future. Any tips or guidance will be appreciated. Thank you!

Was a throttle relearn procedure done when the parts were changed? Maybe that would intercept the ecu’s take of what’s going on for the initial mileage and stop the excess boost, or set parameters earlier on. . I dont know if it will, but might be worth a try. Search for the procedure. I’d say what I think it involves but I’m not positive I have it correct and don’t want to mislead. .
