I lurk here. Love the 500X but no dealers here in Alaska! Anyway, have any of you guys tried these?

I have one on my Jeep Wrangler and they work well. Just FYI. Thanks!

I used the Fumoto valve on about three other cars I've owned and its quite convenient. You have to be careful to install it with the lever in a position that it cant be hit by debree . A drawback of the valve is that it makes the opening smaller so oil flow is slower when doing a change. Some cars will need an adapter to make it fit (depending on the drain design).

When the oil change light comes on depends on how you drive. The 10,000 mile / 12 mounth interval is the max. Here is how the system works from a previous post:

    OIL CHANGE INDICATOR SYSTEM

Your vehicle is equipped with an automatic oil change indicator system. The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. Based on engine operation conditions, the oil change indicator message will illuminate. This means that service is required for your vehicle. Operating conditions such as frequent short-trips, trailer tow, extremely hot or cold ambient temperatures, and E85 fuel usage will influence when the “Change Oil” message is displayed. Severe operating conditions can cause the change oil message to illuminate as early as 3,500 miles (5,600 km) since last reset. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km). Your authorized dealer will reset the oil change indicator message after completing the scheduled oil change. If a scheduled oil change is performed by someone other than your authorized dealer, the message can be reset by referring to the steps described under “Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)” in “Understanding Your Instrument Panel” for further information.

NOTE: Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles (16 000 km) or twelve months, whichever comes first.
    Severe Duty All Models

Change Engine Oil at 4000 miles (6,500 km) if the vehicle is operated in a dusty and off road environment. This type of vehicle use is considered Severe Duty.

There are differences between countries that do effect drain intervals. An example is the gasoline that other countries sell may have a higher/lower sulfur content. Available oil is also a factor. The cars for NAFTA also undergo more extreme climate conditions (frigid Northern Canada to the heat of Death Valley).

How much oil does it take?
I read the manual that states 5.5 quart. But would it really suck up this much? Isn't it initial fill only and then each change would be say 5 quarts?

I am just thinking if I have to get a jug plus one quart...
And one quart is almost like a half of jug (cost wise).

Just get a jug then. Surely you'll be near full and well above the bottom line on the oil dipstick. Filling to the top line is nice but certainly not mandatory.

Costco sells Mobil 1 full synthetic oil at really good prices. You get six one quart bottles in a box. Or go to Walmart and buy a 5 quart jug.

Yeah, I go to Walmart most of the time and get Pennzoil, full synt at about 25 a jug.
That's what I thought. Even if the total is 5.5 quarts, putting 5 quarts will make it at least to the minimum so if I need more I would get one bottle then.

I was just wondering what is practical capacity, or actual need of this engine.

I just got my first and last oil change at the studio for just over $75. Oh, you wanted a tire rotation with that? That will be a little extra. I have always done most of my own maintenance on my vehicles, but I wanted to support my dealer and in turn, do my part to support Fiat in the US. That won't happen again.

After I changed the oil in my 500X 2.4 a couple of times I noticed that the drain plug hex was getting a bit rounded. Yiles! it's a 1/2" hex, not 13mm.
