User Reputation feature (new)

Back to the sheriffs badge and the notifications. The notifications no longer come in, which is fine. But if they are supposed to be coming in, then it's broken.

Maybe the sheriffs badge could light up after giving reputation? I click on it once, but for some reason after clicking on it, it says "you cannot give reputation to the same post twice". I am not intentionally clicking on it twice that I know of. And I don't know if it's "going through" as there is no visible record of me clicking on the post.

When you click on the thanks button, it is hooked to the Reputation system so when you click 'Thanks' you give someone 5 points of reputation. If you then click the Star icon, it will say you already gave the post reputation so it won't allow you to.

On the other hand, if you click on the Star icon first you can award reputation in the amount of whatever Reputation Power you have accumulated.

Note Reputation is something people give to you. Reputation Power are points you award to someone when you click the Star button.

Reputation Power is something you earn, and things like time, how many posts and how much positive reputation people have given you are factors that add up to your Reputation Power. You can check this in your settings page.

An interesting detail is that if you have more Reputation Power than the 5 points the Thanks button gives, click the Star button and you'll give the poster your Reputation Power points.

After you award someone reputation via the Star button you can then hit the Thanks button if you also publicly want to thank someone. The Thanks button in that situation will not award the person an additional 5 points.

The thing to remember is that this is all about thanking people for contributing to the community eg. knowledge, entertainment, fun etc. I can't personally come over and shake everyone's hand or buy them a beer (which I would love to), but I can give a thank you that may award you with a color icon and a whimsical phrase. LOL

Now there's a pop up window asking if I want to add positive or negative reputation. With a small comments section. It's like a way to respond to a post without actually posting a message on the forum.

Hoping that the negative reputation isn't used for flaming people. Not that we have that problem here.

Clicking the Star button opens up the Reputation comment box where you can personally say thank you while you award someone reputation points.

The system is designed to make it easier to give positive reputation and harder to give negative reputation. And I have spent a lot of time on making this system this way.

For example anyone can give positive reputation to something even if they just joined.

On the other hand. You need to have earned Reputation Points to leave negative reputation. That takes a while. You cannot join and then spam someone with negative reputation. Also, troublemakers who want to abuse the system generally don't have many reputation points so even if they award negative reputation to someone, it will not drastically effect someone's reputation.

On top of that, you have to wait a certain amount of time before you can hit the same person up with reputation.

You also have to post a comment to leave negative reputation and the comments are subject to the guidelines of posting on the forum.

Because the system is here to award people and not have people harassed or spammed these comments can be reviewed if necessary or reported. Loss of reputation and infraction points will result.

You can only give give reputation to so many people a day, and cannot give the same person reputation twice in a day although you should be able to Thank the person multiple times. This is also to prevent folks from spamming one person with negative reputation.

The main takeaway is this is basically a more advanced "Thanks" system that we've been using over the years. You don't have to change clicking on Thanks, which will also award someone reputation, but if you want to give someone a bigger "Thanks" and you have more Reputation Power than 5 points you can elect to click the Star button.

Like everything else, we are always looking to improve things so if there is a suggestion feel free to let me know.

I'll put all my posts together and write up how the Reputation system works and put it in our FAQ section of the forum.

That's the cool thing. It is up to you how and what you do. Just like it is fun to upload an avatar, change the colors in your profile page, etc, working with the Reputation system is a way to interact with the forum. A person can give someone a bunch of Reputation Points to a person with a good post, or just do a quick thank you. Either way, it's up to each individual how they want to thank someone. It's always nice to get a thanks and it's pretty cool to give someone a reputation bump up!

I wished the time just stayed the same all.year round. We have daylight savings time like alot of people in the winter and it sure makes it long when it's dark by 4:30-5:00 in December. It's almost to work in the dark and home in the dark

I just noticed if you hover over the green dot area, it will give a little message. Depends on the number of dots as to which message appears. Neato!
