    User Reputation feature (new)

The new User Reputation star/sheriff badge below each post and resulting green dots...

These things are often abused, and may have the effect of turning people off.

For one, it sure looks like I can click my own posts. And with over 4,000 posts, I'd be busy and have a stellar reputation. I shouldn't get to click on my own posts.

Next, when new people join, they are blank slates. They don't have any thanks, they don't have any reputation, and it makes them feel left out. Worse still are badges that were only available like 5 years ago, that new people would never have a chance at earning. It's all fun when you're part of an original group, but coming in late means you'll never earn those badges.

I like to thank new folks for posting pictures when they join. To get the ball rolling, as it does take effort to post pics and opens up conversations on the vehicle image. But not everyone posts a lot, and that means they may be left out of "thanks" and now "reputation".

Back on the Honda Fit board, we had the reputation type thing, and were also allowed to make a negative vote. You know what happened. People could and would gang up on a negative post, resulting in a line of red dots going under the screen name. AND, for people who wanted to cheat the system, there was a thread for getting more green dots. Supposed to go through and reward the people in the thread. Just for posting in the thread.

It was all fun and funny, at first. But then the dots, one way or another, they didn't mean anything at that point. And may have scared off new people from the multi-red dot people or placed too much importance on the green dot people.

With the "Thanks", it's up to us to decide what rates a "Thanks". I'm pretty generous, I like to see pics, so I'll often thank for those. I like links, information, so I'll often thank for those. Sometimes it's a conversation going on, where the "thanks" is more like nodding my head in agreement with the rest of what others are saying, and it's a big thank-fest, as everyone else is doing the same thing. Thanking everyone else.

The reputation thing is almost a duplicate of thanks, in my opinion, except I can't thank myself for my own post. As the badge shows up under my own posts, it sure looks like I can add to my own reputation.

The only way I see the reputation thing as having value would be to have it only for the moderators. The moderators can decide if it's useful or not, and they're the ones reading all the posts.

I was startled to see a bunch of notifications, thought maybe someone was spamming me, but are the notifications are part of the email limit, which is/was fairly low for new folks? One great post and they'd be bombarded with notifications, and might not know to delete those things for the ability to use the private messaging.

And, last, but not least, I felt uncomfortable seeing I had one more green dot than the actual administrator of the site. Never mind that some of the green dots came from Chris probably testing out the new feature, but it just doesn't seem right.

Someone will always feel left out, someone will always be new and therefore be behind in reputation dots, and it's never fun to be left out or be behind. I would kind of like this new feature to go back where it came from. haha So nobody has any green dots, and nobody feels left out.

Then I may have to go to all of your forum posts and thank you....only to unthank you later. Just to keep things interesting.

    That's when the forum implodes.

OK, the reputation thing is built into vbulletin and it was initiated to be a positive thing. It is there to encourage people to post. The rep system in Vbulletin is more sophisticated than the systems used before and is designed to minimize abuse which was my main concern. Some notes:

    • Everyone starts off the same and has the same positive reputation level, including me.
    • You cannot give yourself reputation. When you click on the "Star" button it is there to show you your reputation as a reference.
    • You need a certain number of posts before you can leave reputation.
    • The ability to leave reputation is called "Reputation Power" and is based off of a number of things including reputation level, how long you've been here and how much you post. It will generally take a number of people to change a reputation level. One person is generally not going to drastically alter someone's reputation. It will take a bunch. This should curb abuse.
    • You cannot leave reputation again for the same person until you leave it for a number of others.
    • There is a limit to how many people every day you can leave reputation for.
    • You cannot leave negative reputation without a comment.
    • The system is set up to have positive reputation add up quickly and it is much more difficult to add negative reputation.
    • Reputation is a long term process that grows the more a person contributes.
    • We'll monitor the system for abuse, and can revisit this if it happens. Members need to forward me any abusive comments and they will be dealt with. Negative reputation shouldn't be given because you disagree with the poster. We all have opinions. It is envisioned to be given to someone who, for example, goes against the Guidlines for Posting on the Forum or typical bad forum behavior (trolling, flaming, thread crapping, etc.).

This is very similar to the "Thanks" feature. The system is set up to give positive encouragement to those who post, plus it is an added thank you for those who contribute to the community. Even new members can accrue a bunch of "Thanks" in a short period of time, so they aren't left out. The Rep system has certain levels which can be an incentive to achieve, so it can be fun, but it also doesn't need to be taken too seriously. If you've gotten positive reputation, take it as a thank you and a good thing!

The other thing is that I like the idea of the community deciding what is a useful or good post and not so much the staff.

But there are still people with an unfair advantage. Like me. LOL! I post a lot, I'm disabled and at home all the time and enjoy the forum. At last! An advantage to being stuck at home. I'd STILL rather have everyone send me a dollar. Ka-ching

I didn't realize there was negative reputation, I haven't clicked on the sheriff badge yet. I feel uncomfortable with it. We're JUDGING EACH OTHER. Thanks can be kind of casual or a heartfelt thanks for very important info. Now there's the dilemma of actively affecting a very visible "reputation".

Does anyone remember Klout? It was something else that could be gamed, if one was in a group. I realized it couldn't be more bogus when I had a Klout score higher than an astronaut I respected. It all depends on people's participation, and the motivation to participate can vary.

There is no real difference between thanking someone and giving positive reputation. Consider it another way to show appreciation. People don't need to use the system, but some folks really help others and it's nice to acknowledge them. A lot of folks take time out of their day to post helpful info, so I think it's nice that they get a little recognition. Those who have contributed a lot like yourself and others have earned more reputation power because of the contributions and commitment to the community and being around here for a while. No need to apologize or feel guilty. I love everyone that visits, but those who take the next step and post and contribute drive the community forward.

As soon as I read this thread, I thought of Bad Reputation by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. That's how my mind works, I associate almost everything with music. I think it's a good feature to have and I think it's not just about the quantity of posts that someone makes but the quality of those posts and how much they help others, so people like you Andree, deserve it.

Funny thing is using the dark theme which I prefer by FAR over the lighter forum theme you don't really notice the rep button... I had to actively look to find it.
