My previous 2012 had the shaft replaced with a "revised" part in 2013, only to start clunking again about 10k later. My Oct 2013 build 2013 model developed the clunk. I sprayed white lithium grease at the shaft connection point and the clunk disappeared for quite awhile but has resurfaced. I have zero confidence that the newest "revised" part fixes the problem as my friend's 2015 Cabrio has the clunk as well. I'll just continue zapping it with the grease.

Steering started clunking every time turn steering wheel. Was told by mechanic that until Fiat puts out a fix then nothing can be done...then was told that it is normal? Can anyone give me advice on how to get this fixed? I'm just gonna sell it if can't....tired of run around!!

There are numerous threads with info on this. There is a fix out there:

If it was done after April 2015 they probably used the new revised design. If it was done earlier, it was likely done with an older part.

It takes about 15 minutes to change and the last I heared cost about $115. Alternatively, you can spray some white lithium grease between the two column pieces and that will also take care of the issue for a while.

If you're shopping for a USED 500 Abarth, what should you be looking/listening/feeling for to see if this part is currently broken? Any cars newer than 2015 use an improved, modified shaft from the get go?

As far as I know this has been taken care of in the newer cars as I haven't heard folks with newer cars complain about it. It's not really broken, it is more of an annoyance. How to tell:

"This can happen when the car is sitting still and the driver turns the steering wheel left and right or when driving slowly and doing the same maneuver.

The sound manifests itself as a clunking, popping, or knocking noise emanating from the lower steering column while turning the steering wheel."
