    Help identifying transmission part

So my wife's 500c pop started making a grinding scraping noise from the transmission, even in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal out), but not when the pedal was in. Long story short, I have removed and disassembled the tranny, and all of the metal parts and bearings appear fine. I did find some chewed up black plastic that i have been unable to identify from the diagrams in the shop manual or on fiat parts webstore. The part is completely mangled, but here is a picture of the pieces I removed. Most of the pieces were in the bell housing on the gearbox side. some pieces were in the gearbox itself. There is a notch in the bell housing where the input shaft comes through, so i thought maybe it was some kind of shim that holds the inout shaft steady, but i can't find any such part listed. Any ideas?IMG_1374.JPG

Could be parts of the clutch release bearing?

No. It was on the wrong side of the bell housing for that, and there are no loose metal parts like ball bearings.

The part I was thinking about us what in mopar parts website is named seal, part 5 in the draw hereatfer.
In italian is "cuscinetto reggispinta", there are several variants and some have plastic parts.
But I think I didn't understood where You found the plastic debris, that, if I am right this time, were inside the housing of the gearbox part where there are the axles, forks, gears, ....

In the lower left draw there is the location where the part 5 is installed.

At first I thought it might be the inspection cover (shown as part #6), but could you clarify again where you found the pieces? I'm confused how some parts of this could be in the bell housing and the gearbox, since as you know, there is the only part common to both is the input shaft seal. Were there signs of gear oil in the bell housing? After you took the transmission out, did you try spinning the input shaft to see if you could replicate the grinding noise? Finally; how many miles on this vehicle?

The pieces were found on the transmission side of the bell housing, when I unbolted the transmission from it, not on the side where the clutch resides. The car has 95000 miles on it. I did spin the gears with no replication of the noise. I have the transmission pretty much completely disassembled, and all of the gears, bearings, seals, and synchros appear fine. More information; I first tried adding gear oil, and the transmission was very low on it when I added some, so I know the transmission has been leaking, but there is no oil in the clutch area, and the clutch itself is good, of course, it only has 45000 miles on it.

Wow, interesting. Sorry you had to be first on this site to dissect a manual transmission on one of these cars. I can't imagine what that part used to be.

On a side, but somewhat related note; my wife's 2012 looks like it may be losing gear oil out one of the axle seals. This, right on the heals of having just replaced the head (and water pump, timing belt, etc.). I was driving the car this past Saturday and noted a burning oil smell after exiting the highway. After arriving at home, I crawled under the car with the belly pan off and noted a clean drips of gear oil where the seal is. That may be where your gear oil went too.

Don't know about you, but I'm getting weary of working on this thing, considering it's only four years old.
