The SIM card may not matter. The 500e uses the cell connection to connect to a server to offer services. The connection to the server is disabled 36 months after sale no matter what SIM card is installed.

As an alternative, take a look at the My500e. It's a system that installs using the OBD2 CAN port, with a separate cell connection and a separate set of servers. I personally declined the unit due to annual cell fees. But it is a working alternative to trying to re-enable the OEM 500e telematics unit.
