Goodbye Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200

Sergio Marchionne has stated that these two small cars just aren't selling, and the FCA group needs to sell more Jeeps and Rams!

People are still buying small sedans. Honda, Koreans, Toyota, Nissan, GM, BMW.
    Honda sold 355,557 Accords last year, and 335,384 Civic's. Hyundai sold 222,023 Elanta's. Toyota sold 363,332 Corolla's, and 429,355 Camry's.

Chrysler only sold 177,889, 200's. Which isn't that bad compared, to its competition, out there. Dodge Dart 87,392 units, 2015.

Over 265,281 Darts, and 200's last year. Why is he keeping the Fiat brand over those kind of numbers. Just what we need more SUV's Gas is going to stay under 2 bucks forever. The only smart move is the hybrid Pacifica mini van.

The Dart and 200 were introduced out of a need to supply those specific cars in the CDJR range (in order to fulfill the prerequisites to overtake the USAmerican group). FCA continues to purchase economy credits. That is throwing money away when they can just introduce more fuel efficient cars like the new Pacifica (to counterbalance the ever-popular Challenger and Charger).

The FIAT 500X advert claims "We fixed the sedan". Look at the long stretching history of the automaker and you'll find an overwhelming amount of hatchbacks in their repertoire. They rescheduled the release of the AR Giulia (a beautiful sedan) to focus on the AR SUV. Maybe they took that "we fixed it" slogan seriously.

The reason is that the SUVs have better margin and they can't make them fast enough. The change will increase production on cars that make better money. Gas prices will eventually go back up though. They better have more hybrids ready to release before then.

It's also worth noting FIAT is retiring those models here, but they'll continue on in their Italian versions… the Viaggio and the Tipo.

I see far more hatchbacks and full-size/compact SUVs than I see sedans.

The numbers you posted for those longtime global brands are dismal. As much as it must confuse someone insisting FIAT needs to introduce sedans to the line-up, the NA market is speaking.

I'd say he's already done the reality check, and the 200 and Dart are NOWHERE near the Camrys of the world in numbers and quality. AND, by NOT building Darts and 200s, those factories can crank out the better SELLING and more PROFITABLE Rams and Jeeps, and that's all there is to it. US and Canada sales are just part of the FCA world wide numbers that influence these kinds of billion dollar issues.

The crossover segment is saturated too. I do think this is a temporary smart move. Gas won’t stay cheap forever, but the non-luxury sedan is dying. It’s a compromised body style and people prefer the ride height, practicality and pretense of utility they get with crossovers. The RAV4 and CR-V are rapidly catching up to the Camry and Accord these days. The sedan’s days are numbered.

To fill the gaps in the lineup, FCA will probably outsource with another automaker. More re-badged Mazdas.
