The sales of the X seem to be slightly cannibalizing sales of the 500 and L. Nor are they particularly high. Sales of the X in Europe are over 7k per month.

I am leaning towards the opinion that Fiat will always be a niche brand in the US. More along the lines of Mini. There is a small segment of consumers that likes Fiats for what they are. FCA doesn't have vehicles within any other brand that works well with that segment.

There is another segment that is sensitive to gas prices, but will only consider a Fiat if the gas prices are high. Which they wont be again for awhile.

Even the 124 spider will still be a bit of a niche car. Usually a coupe convertible is not the first choice of a car for most people. Its something they buy as a second or third car (if they can afford it). Even the Miata doesnt sell more than a few hundred per month.

I'm ok with Fiat remaining a niche marque as long as they have enough success to keep offering new models.

What I don't want to see it Fiat pull a MINI and make 10 models when there should really only be 2. See Clubman, Paceman, etc for unnecessary models. If Fiat can produce multiple generations of the 500, 124, and pick one of the two between L and X (I'd say X wins here) that is a great offering covering different customer needs.

    Cheers to continued increased sales!

Yes the Miata was only selling a few hundred per month before the new 2016 facelift, but the new Generation Miata is now averaging over 1,000 per month.

It will probably drop back down again. September was under 1000. A good part of those sales are probably due to the refresh (previous owners want the new model), rather than a sustained increase in sales. Its too early to tell for sure though.

There will always be "must have the newest car" people, who will account for the early sales and even waiting lists. And yes, the sales usually drop after those people have gotten their vehicles, because their older versions hit the market. And others will have a chance at picking up a used example at a good price. It's pretty much a never-ending circle if the cars are well made.

I kind of wonder what factors really drive car buyers. Would someone who was considering a 500 buy an L or X? Here in Arizona if you go out car shopping this time of year (107 today) you must really need/want a car. When I bought my Fiesta a big driver was the 0% financing (I got home that night to learn Chrysler had started offering 0% that day on Fiats....argh!). This year I was really tired of the big four door Fiesta. I shopped Mini online, no dealing with them at all. I visited Toyota, talk about attitude! They tried to upsell me to a Corolla because they didn't have any Yaris' that I liked. Honda Fit, small but again four doors and no selection though the people there were really nice (when did the Civic get so huge? Ouch). The next morning I was off to Fiat, almost $5,000 in rebates. I wasn't on this forum then, although I understood the various models I wasn't looking for a particular one, I wanted a blue stick shift but from there out it was a toss up until I did my test drive. I drove a Pop, a Sport and a Turbo. The wonky shifting of the stick left me cold, I didn't like the speedo cluster on the Pop and the Turbo they had a copper stick and a granito auto. So by this time I already knew I was buying as I loved the way they drove. No blue cars on the lot so basically I had a choice between a red Abarth either with black leather or red and black leather, both sticks, a copper Turbo stick or a Red stick Sport and either a stick or auto white Sport. I wish I had been on here and known about the short shifter mod it might have convinced me to not go auto. I looked at the 1957 edition in celeste blue, not my style. I would have never considered an L though, too big for my taste and needs. So now we have big rebates again which should drive more traffic and sales. I predict a boost next month (cooler weather too!).
