Charity Laps/Open House at VIR: April 3rd

This Friday, April 3rd 2015 is an open house and Charity Laps at Virginia International Raceway near Danville VA: http://virnow.com/2015/03/12/open-ho...-laps-april-3/

They will have a variety of events, highlighted by driving YOUR car for 15 minutes on part of the track for a $25 donation to charity. In addition, the kart track will be open, as well as other ride-along with Richard Petty Experience cars and Ariel Atom cars for charity donations. The charity laps will run from 8am-4pm I believe, and they will have food and drinks available for purchase too.

If anyone else is attending, I'm planning to take the day off work and be there sometime later in the morning with my Rosso Abarth, hope to see some more FIATS there if possible!

What most caught my attention...the Atom, driving it would be so much fun I imagine but riding seems like a lot of fun as well of course.

I agree, the ride-along things in any kind of car only go so far and usually don't sound so great compated to driving, but at least riding in an Atom would be cool. The Richard Petty Driving Experience guys will be there today too, but I think they are only doing ride-alongs also. Also just saw their Facebook page, and that lists there will be $15 rides in a Lamborghini and some other cool cars too! https://www.facebook.com/virnow

Here's some more of the info for this event --I couldn't find all this on the website, but here is part of an email from VIR:

Planting Ceremony for Son of Oak Tree
Set for 12:00 noon at South Course

VIR will hold a special ceremony memorializing the track’s iconic oak tree with the replanting of a descendant of the original tree.

The iconic oak tree, which stood for more than 200 years and fell in the summer of 2013, served as a prominent feature, symbol and welcome shade to the track’s south end. Last year, VIR discovered “the son of oak tree,” which had been planted from an acorn taken from the original tree about ten years ago by a former VIR employee. Through consultation with the director of agribusiness development for Pittsylvania County and a Virginia Cooperative Extension arborist, the tree will be transported and replanted near the spot of the old oak tree. The new location will be outside the track, approximately 150 feet from the original location, providing more stable ground and accommodating modern racing safety regulations.

The tree replanting ceremony will take place from about noon to 1 p.m. during the April 3 Open House event. The ceremony will also unveil a memorial marker made from the tree’s wood and will be placed on the ground where the old oak tree once stood. Connie Nyholm, owner and CEO of VIR, will speak and photo opportunities will be available.

Like an idiot I forgot the mount for the GoPro, so this is just a hand held one lap. Audio not great, but what a great day weather wise, and so much fun to drive around the full track for 15 minutes or so!

Video on Facebook (much better if you hit the HD setting!) https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v...13636611799727

I was behind two BMW Z4s, and right in front of three Mini Coopers with whatever engine the Works edition has. This wasn't a race, and there was no passing, so top speed on the straights was hitting 90mph. For the most part I felt that the Zs had more power coming out of the corners into the straights, and the lead Mini was staying with me all the time, but it was just blast driving around!
The change in elevation was more than I thought it would be from only watching videos of VIR, and overall it was a big event with lots of people getting track time and donating to the Victory Junction charity that was started by the Petty family.
Didn't do the ride alongs, but they had a Gallardo, two race cars, a BMW M3 and the Ariel Atom doing laps and staying clear of the drivers like me.
On our way out in the afternoon we saw the Lamborghini being towed off track, so I'm not sure what issue they had with the car!

The day after VIR my wife and I had a great drive that went west around Martinsville, and up onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. Great fun on the twisty roads, big elevation changes, and then a leisurely 45mph cruise on the parkway, before a long slog thru NC and VA to get home here to VA Beach.
A great couple of FIAT days, absolutely no issues with the Abarth now over 38,000 miles. The last few hours coming home mostly on a very flat divided state route 58 in VA saw me park in the garage with the readout of 37.9mpg, so obviously going on cruise control, flat roads, around 60mph is about the best mileage I realistically think you can get with the Abarth for me.

I'll get some photos of the event and a blog post later today.

Here's the blog post, with photos (like the Gallardo being towed off the track!) http://www.nms-racing.net/2015/04/ch....html?spref=fb

The other funny thing I should mention is that I had a blast driving, safely, but my wife is just not a big fan of any driving events, but she rode along and pretty much didn't like it! I had offered to let her visit the VIR spa the entire time so since she turned that down I can really kid her about it!

At least if you're married I hope you can get a chuckle out of that one!
