I know about hypermiling but it's an annoying way to drive. Using hypermiling techniques, I went from 27 mpg to 33 in a 2017 500 pop. I hope to improve my mileage as it gets older. My techniques include: shifting < 2k rpm, coasting everywhere that I can, and staying under 55. But I live in Southern Ca. and have rolling hills all over the place. Additionally, we have stop lights at the tops of the many hills (which I try to drive around). I don't see how I'm ever going to get over 35 in a place like this.

With the AC on the mileage really drops. My commute is 25 miles, pretty hilly and running 60mph with the AC on my instant read is only 22-25mpg is there something wrong with my car? I've had it a month, it's a 2015 Fiat 500 Pop with 45000 miles on it.

That depends on how steep the hills are and how far down you push the go peddle accordingly. Air conditioning takes about 10-15 horsepower from a 100HP engine. In her weekday commute my wife travels 42 miles each way on two lane 55MPH roads. The hills are less than 2% grade, and she gets 41-42MPG with, or without the AC on. As they say though; your mileage may vary.

Welcome to the forum. A few observations. First, the basics like has the maintenance been done on the car prior to you getting it. There isn't a lot of maintenance required on the 500 but what is listed should be documented so you know. You mentioned you have 45,000 miles on your car. Do you know if the spark plugs were changed at 30,000 miles? Plugs can make a big difference in the running of a car and if there is no proof that they were done, it's good idea to change them and start off knowing what the status is of them. The other thing is tire pressure can have a huge impact on mpgs, so check that too.

Indicated instant and avg mpgs may not be accurate, so take that with a grain of salt. The best way to check gas mileage is to fill the tank up (make sure you don't try to squeeze more gas in after the nozzle shuts off), zero the mileage, drive and then refill, preferable (if possible) at the same pump and at the same time of day and record your mileage. Divide the miles by the gallons and keep track of the results. That will yield the most accurate results. Comparing instant mpgs is extremely hard because there are too many variables like road, weather and driving conditions along with throttle position. Average is better, but you'd need to compare the readings over identical routes to really be accurate.

If your car has a manual transmission, try getting into the higher gears as quickly as reasonably possible without lugging the engine. Usually shifting at 2000 rpms under light cruise will yield best results.

I'm getting 23 mpg and I have no idea why my fuel economy is so bad, I drive specifically to maximize fuel economy only use 93 octane and my fuel economy fluctuates from 21-24 mpg average. Driving a GQ edition.
