    Great underrated almost forgotten car. My very first car was a tatty five year old 1971 124 Sport coupe. I paid $900 for it. When I bought it I knew next to nothing but I loved the angular greenhouse and the dashboard. About three weeks into ownership I learned about the timing belt! The previous owner had thrown away the cover. I agree with the OP, it is easy to work on and once you've eradicated the consequences of a previous owner's neglect the list of weaknesses is small. I remember switchgear was a bit iffy, especially the heater fan blower and the headlight switches. The mechanical fuel pump tended to be short-lived. By 1973 Fiat had solved that problem with an electric unit. The remote gear shift bushings tended to wear out long before the gearbox did. I remember during the central California winters the Fiat was MUCH happier starting in the morning if I put a blanket over the hood before going to bed the night before. I learned about the Italian tuneup: when it started getting a little fuzzy in its running I'd just drive it out to the edge of town and run it in 2nd or 3rd gear at the red line for a few minutes. After that it idled and ran faultlessly. It was truly a car with character. Tuck it in for the night, exercise it like a race horse and it'll take care of you. I was 20 when I bought that car so it lived a short heroic life. I eventually ran it into the side of a new Cadillac Coupe de Ville. The Fiat looked homely after that, but a little crowbar action on the double-skinned front wheel arch on the driver's side and she was ready to drive home in speedy shame. The Cadillac was kinked up into its roof panel, an obvious total loss. The 1971 Fiat ensured that I would never ever own a non-Italian car at any time in the ensuing 40 years. Not even for a week.

    I replaced it with a 1973 124 coupe. Two extra years into emissions compliance cut down the power some but still no awful air pump. The interior materials were more durable. It was a nice clean car but I still had to correct a previous owner's bodging. It had a 1592cc engine but it had the head gasket for a 1608 version. The cylinder spacing is completely different for those two engines. I was starting to grow up just a little so it survived longer.
