    Fiat 500e damaged battery $16k!?

So a friend of mine was driving home from work while it was raining the other night and he was caught in a minor mudslide. The car malfunctioned and dropped battery power after driving through the mud. It was towed to the dealer and they looked at it today and said that the battery shield had a small dent in it and it must have ruptured the battery. The dealer is trying to get exact numbers since they've never replaced one but last time it was talked about was while the techs were in school and it was in the $16,000 range. If it's that expensive shouldn't it be shielded better or is the dealer looking to get a nice check for an insurance job? They keep pushing my friend to file a claim saying that it won't be covered under the warranty. I'll have pics tomorrow when he stops by the dealer.

Pretty tough to say just reading about this online. People are always driving cars through what deceptively looks like a "little" puddle and the next thing you know the car ingests water and the engine hydro-locks or the car is swept away. All it takes is hitting a rock to wreck something important on a car and I can imagine there are a lot of rocks in a mudslide. Most cars aren't designed for that. As far as the dealer goes, why wouldn't they suggest going through insurance? That is a ton of money and maybe they also want a guarantee that someone is going to pay before they order and get stuck with a $16,000 battery. If I had to guess they are probably more concerned with getting stuck for the bill than making money. Let us know how your friend makes out.

Well we will see tomorrow when he sends me pics, I have a 500e as well and if it's as he explains it makes me afraid to drive mine knowing how vulnerable and expensive the undercagage is if something pops up In the road.

This one is pretty gray. I don't know if insurance will consider this an act of God and cover it under comprehensive, or if they will cover it under collision because of the motorist hitting an object on the roadway... Comprehensive claims usually don't affect rates. Collision claims usually do affect rates. Regardless, I'd be very surprised if the repair is covered under warranty.

    Hopefully it all works out.

whatever gave him the idea of driving an electric golf cart with doors through a mudslide?

Your friend drove through a mudslide. That is not a normal road condition or hazard. That is something that shouldn't be done in any car and if it happens, you shouldn't be surprised if something gets damaged. I wouldn't worry about it.

Based on the facts that we have here, I would have to agree this will be an insurance claim. Hopefully he has good insurance. Keep us updated on the progress.

My friend wanted me to post some of his thoughts...

$16,000 in damage to the car? Or more?

I wonder how the insurance company will proceed.

What is the value of the car as far as they are concerned.

Is the car leased? How might gap insurance some to play in someone's favor...or not?

Do they assume "$32,000 car new"...or do the assume "$22,000 after fed and state subsidy" ?

Will this be a total loss?

This could prove very interesting. Please, please, please...OP...keep us informed regarding your friend's experience.

The car is going to be a total loss. The dealer finally got a price on the battery and it's $35,000!?? With an unknown lead time he said. He looked at nada value and couldn't find one
    For a 2014 but 2013 is only $15,000!image.jpg

I still can't believe that a small dent like this will total a car. This seems like a MAJOR design flaw to hang something that cost more than the car to replace under it with an 8th inch steel glued on cover?image.jpg
