That's to cover the extra cost of the muffler, which the Abarths don't come with. lol

The easiest way to think of it is as an Abarth Cabrio with a muffler, sport seats with special trim ( Alcantara inserts) and more color options. It is not as boy racer-ish like the regular Abarth Cabrio, with a look and sound that is suppose to be sophisticated. It is also why you don't get the Abarth Experience. The GQ base is less than the Abarth Cabrio, too.

I mentioned to a company exec that the GQ was a little confusing to some and they said to consider it a 500T Cabrio that has been given the full custom and performance treatment. It sounds like that was the original concept and then they added the Abarth designation to try to cut the confusion on what it is. Don't know if it helped, though.

Still a little convoluted... but that's marketing

I was wrong about the no muffler part though. The GQ muffler might be a nice option for folks that want to quiet down their Abarth.

Curiously, that so-called 'muffler' on the GQ is identical to the 'non-muffler' that 2012 N.A. Abarths initially came with, Abarth stampings pressed in and all.

    This is correct.
    Abarth engine and transmission (160hp)
    Sport Turbo suspension
Abarth rear diffuser with abarth stamped suitcase muffler
sport turbo seats with GQ leather
sport turbo steering wheel with GQ styling
    GQ 16" wheels
    fiat emblems instead of Abarth
    sport turbo lights.

    that should cover it.

If memory serves... I don't recall it having the Scorpion engine cover or even the fancy pedals. I don't think it says 'Abarth' anywhere on the car either.
To answer the OP's original question, kinda. At least it's listed as such.

The suitcase "muffler" on the early 2012 Abarths are not mufflers. There are no baffles, just the straight through piping.

Here is the inside scoop on what is inside the "suitcase muffler." This is a post from back in June 2012 and I am reposting it here for the benefit of those who missed the thread:

Here, let me share some behind the scenes info. The exhaust that is on the cars after that May date is the standard exhaust the car was designed to have. As many of you know, Fiat changed the muffler tuning up until the very last possible minute. In fact, during the launch at the LA Show, I purposely didn't publish undercarriage shots because things weren't finalized.

Ultimately the car wound up with a straight-pipe exhaust system, but that confirmation came very late in development. Fiat wasn't sure they'd get the go ahead and had to prepare for a muffler system with more noise-attenuation content. Because they needed to launch with a fully validated mechanical system (including the muffler hangers and their body side anchorages), they left the "suitcase" (muffler housing) in the car for the launch. Inside this muffler housing, there's nothing but a straight pipe. It is not an expansion volume in the NAFTA Abarth, though that is its purpose in the (quieter) EU car. Being developed by no nonsense development engineers and racers, it was always Fiat's intention to eliminate the weight of the suitcase once a redesigned piece could be thoroughly engineered.

The benefit is an 18 pound weight reduction. The backpressure is the same, the sound is the same, and even aerodynamics (a potential problem which was carefully evaluated in the wind tunnel) are unchanged within test-to-test variation.

So that's the scoop. Remember, you heard it here first!
