There is a new Fiat 500L Tech Bulletin out that improves engine starting and performance. This is a software upgrade that requires the PCM (Power Control Module) to be reflased with new software. If your car experiences the issue listed below, this software update may take care of the issue. Hint: Write down this Tech Bulletin number and give it to your service writer. He may be unfamiliar with it.

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 1.4L engine (sales code
EAM) built on or before January 10, 1014 (MDH0110XX).

This is from the FIAT500USA.com website: (Note: for 2012-2013 Fiat 500, 500T Turbo and Fiat 500 Abarth models)

Fiat has just released a revised Technical Service Bulletin (Fiat TSB) that describes a software update fixing starting issues for owners of 2012 - 2013 Fiat 500 and 500 Abarth models. This revised TSB, number 18-007-14 REV. B dated October 18, 2014 supersedes TSB 18-007-14 REV. A dated August 14, 2014. The fix involves reflashing the Fiat 500 Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with revised software. The reflash also enhances cold weather starting performance.

The symptoms are an occasional cranking no start condition. Fiat 500 owners may also experience an engine that sounds like it is freewheeling or has no compression. In most situations, this is normally resolved by simply trying to restart the car.

In the original TSB it was mentioned that a small number of Fiat owners may additionally experience a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) P2299 (Brake Pedal Position/ Accelerator Pedal Position Incompatible) and/or P0456-00 (Evap System Small Leak) code(s). The new revised TSB now includes expanded symptoms with the following MIL codes:

P1607-00 - PCM Internal Shutdown Timer Rationality. (Sales code EAB only*)
P2610-00 - PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance. (Sales code EAB only*)
P1239-00 - Engine Oil Temperature Too Low. (Sales code EAB only*)
P0298-00 - Engine Oil Temperature Too High. (Sales code EAB only*)

Note this is for 2012-2013 Fiat 500, 500T Turbo and Fiat 500 Abarth models equipped with the 1.4L MultiAir and MultiAir Turbo engines (sales code EAB or EAF).*

The revised bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 1.4L engine (sales code EAB or EAF) built on or before September 18, 2014 (MDH 0917XX).*

Contact your Fiat Studio for more information. Refer them to Fiat Technical Service Bulletin 18-007-14 REV. B, dated October 18, 2014.

Yes, same numbers. As an update to this story, TSB 18-017-14 for the 500L has been superseded with Fiat TSB 18-033-15, dated April 16, 2015. This make take care of the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) stored in the PCM:• P1524 - Oil Pressure out of range - Camshaft advance/retard disabled**.
    • P113D - O2 Sensor 1/1 Slow Response

Always consult your dealer for the latest info.

Took my 2012 Fiat Pop to my dealer today to inquire about TSB 18-007-14 Rev B. Since my VIN does not appear in the FCA system associated with this TSB, no luck. It seems my dealer doesn't have the latest information, since Fiat TSB 18-033-15, dated April 16, 2015, never came up. As is often the case, my Fiat dealer is primarily a Chrysler dealership, with a Fiat Studio tacked on. Today there was actually no one in the studio when I arrived - totally empty building at 2:00 PM on a Tuesday. Weighing my options at this point...

    Hi Major,
If you would like to private message me your VIN, contact information, and the name of the FIAT studio you've been working with, I would be happy to look into your concerns further.

Update: October 1, 2015 At the urging of our resident FCA Social Media Care Specialist, I gave my local Fiat studio another chance, and they stepped up with a PCM reflash and an EVIC software reflash as well, under warranty. I am really pleased with the attention from the Service Advisor and the extra effort. While waiting, I had a chance to drive a Fiat 500X 6M 1.4L turbo, and was impressed enough to buy it next week. Altogether, a good result for both me and the studio.

UPDATE 2: Since the EVIC software reflash, my clock keeps accurate time! I have not had a "fail to start" since the PCM reflash. The car is running better than it ever has. I am also pleased with the new 500X, though it lacks the bells and whistles of the upscale versions, it does a fine job of getting around at about the advertised MPG.

How can you tell if the TSB addressing this problem has been done? On service work, like oil change and new battery, I see where a recall was done but nothing specific. Even after the battery change still having the starting issue and service "can't replicate." Typically occurring to wife's 2012 500 Lounge after sitting unused due to various trips via airline. Still questioning if needed battery as no problem turning over or sounding horn - but was 4 y/o and still under warranty (til November) so will take it. Most recent was a couple weeks ago after new battery, oil change and 'recall', took the 500 on a trip rather than the VW diesel as trying to hold mileage down for the VW buyback. Stopped for dinner, came out, and would crank and crank and crank, but never catch. Waited several minutes and kept re-trying, and repeating several times to no avail. Finally called insurance for towing benefit (couldn't find the Chrysler ppwrk to call them) and after transfer to the downing company, basic troubleshooting wanted me to put in change gears - park to drive and back - had to turn the key so turned all the way and started back up. Drove home from there but had issue with power loss (probably user error) as approached entrance it Interstate and coasted across 3 lanes to gas station. Was able to re-start, but too slower US highway home rather than risk Interstate breakdown. Took in the next day, and no problem identified other than error code incompatible brake accelerator position (I was keeping the revs up so didn't stall at 2 traffic lights before Interstate entrance- but apparently the computer didn't like it).

    Hi tizeye!

I don’t know if this specific TSB applies to your vehicle but if you PM our page with your VIN I can check for you! Also, if you want to PM our page with a photo of your invoice I can look it over for you. Let me know if you have any additional questions!

My check engine light was triggered when I started the car after letting it sit for a week in the high temps at PHX airport. The error code is P2610. Also the electronic info center won't show digital mileage any more, although it has for two years, and everything else works fine. Any ideas?
