Warning message on your 500e - This how to reset and fix your 500e

The 500e is a very complex machine and you might see a warning message that gets triggered and the 500e might need to be reset.
You can solve these issues by this fix. The connections on the 12 volt battery need to be tight. Some 500e cars the 12 volt battery connections are loose and this can trigger the warnings and make the 500e not drivable. I'm including pictures so you can see how to fix this and reboot the 500e. Electric cars are very complex and 500e can only be rebooted this way. Other electric cars like the Chevy Volt can be rebooted by shutting the car down and opening the driver door.

The 500e cannot be rebooted this way. You have to disconnect power from the 12 volt battery to reset the 500e. By performing this task I have eliminated this problem and I have eliminated the problem that few others have had of grinding braking when stopping. The 500e is very sensitive and to protect the main battery and other systems (regenerative braking) it will go into a limp mode and in some cases the 500e will not be able to drive at all.

You can fix this very easy and and I encourage all 500e owners to make sure these connections are secure.

First remove this cover by pulling it up. It just pulls right off.

Now you will see the 12 volt car battery and it's the positive connection that we will remove to reset the 500e.

    image.jpg

Pull off the red plastic cover on the positive side of the 12 volt battery. You will see two ten millimeter nuts. Loosen the one the wrench is on then you can remove the terminal from the battery post.

    image.jpg

Keep the terminal disconnected for sixty seconds. Now put the terminal back on the positive battery post with one hand holding it there and with your other hand tighten the ten millimeter nut. Make sure the the other ten millimeter nut right next to this one is tight as well. ( mine was loose and I had a warning massage) also check the ten millimeter nut on the negative side a make sure it's tight.

Now turn on the 500e and the error code message will be gone. If not turn the 500e on and off five times and the codes will clear.

I keep this ten millimeter wrench in the back of each 500e that I own. As this electric car is a very complex machine and like a computer is might need to be reset sometimes. And the only way to to this is the way I described above. Since resetting one of my 500e's back in November I have had no more error messages and that 500e has thousands of miles on it. I have also checked the nuts on the other 500e's that I own and made sure they were tight and have had no trouble with those cars as well.

I figured this out on my own but I confirmed this with Brett Giem Chief Engineer of the 500e. He agreed with me that this would reset 500e. I have had no more error messages and that 500e has thousands of miles on it. I have also checked the nuts on the other 500e's that I own and made sure they were tight and have had no trouble with those cars as well.

Copied this and made it a sticky in the DIY area since many times people look there for solutions to problems, also sticky it here for easy reference.

    Thanks for the contribution.

Not sure if my post should go here or not but here goes:

I lost control of my 500e the other day as i swerved to avoid another car, nearly spinning out and coming to a screeching halt - ESC, and ABS came on. After I regained control, the following warning lights were on, and I had the following saved messages:
    1. ABS Service Required
    2. RBS Service Required (regenerative braking)
    3. ESC Service Required
    4. Hill start assist Service Required

When i got home, I tried inthemovie's instructions to reset the car. I think i did the reset correctly, because my clock was reset however the above 4 messages were still present.

I got the hill start assist service required message to go away by toggling it off in the menu, turning the car off, then turning it back on. I was able to toggle it back on without the message coming back.

I was not able to turn ESC off or on while this warning light and message were on. Pushing the ESC button did nothing.

I tried resetting 1 more times, and then also tried turning the car on an off 5 times. That didn't work either.

My positive terminal was not loose to begin with.

Anyways, the messages all went away on their own about 24 hours later - i can't say 100% for sure, but i think it had to do with the number of times i turned the car on and off. It was maybe 30 times on and off and more than the 24 hours since the incident and the messages went away. I've driven about 200 miles since and the messages have not come back nor are there any noticable drivabilty issues (ESC button and hill start both work).

Which warning message are you referring to? "Service electric vehicle system," or something else? Thanks

I just took delivery of my FIAT 500e 2 days ago and noticed this brake grinding noise even when the brakes are not applied. After just 80 miles there is a lot of brake dust that has collected on the paint behind both front wheels. ( at first I thought it was road tar splatter )

I have no error messages but are you saying that by disconnecting the battery it's possible to correction this brake noise / grinding issue ? Is there anything else one has to do while the battery is disconnected ? ( pump the brake pedal ? )

    Thanks for the heads up.

That does not sound right, I'd head back to the dealer.

the car should be smooth and silent... I've only heard that noise once, in an extreme braking situation and I'm sure it was the ABS system.

I may be WAY off but I know some have mentioned a grinding noise related to braking and found a small rock and some shielding created an issue. Worth checking at the least.

Well, a small pebble trapped between the dust shield and the rotor would certainly seem to have those symptoms, or something caught in a brake pad and dragging a bit, since you only actually "use" the brakes below 8 mph.

Might be pretty simple to pull a wheel and look... can you tell if it is one side or the other?
