    Future Turbo Upgrade/Replacement

Hello Everybody. I was talking over the issue of a turbo upgrade for our cars as I figured with all the upgrades that we are doing, especially ecu piggybacks etc, which increase the boost to levels where the stock turbo is maxed out (24psi) and just normal wear and tear our turbos are going to eventually wear out. When that time comes what are you guys planning on replacing it with? Another stock replacement or something slightly bigger and more efficient? I know in the VW/Audi world the K03/K04 upgrade was pretty popular and was a direct replacement that gave a bit more power. Is there something like that for our cars yet?

you might be able to get a gt1548 (extremely close to stock performance) or maybe a gt 2052 or 2056 that bolts up. there is also a smaller turbo fiat considered with a variable exhaust geometry instead of a wastegate but i don't know what car it comes on for a part number. the smaller turbo was a gt1444 and the flow is actually very close the the 1446 but the exhaust wouldn't be as restrictive. it would be an oem turbo not something you can search on the garrett site without a part number.

honestly if i ever do an upgraded turbo i think i'll try a gt2259. the surge line is important on a small engine and that seems like the biggest turbo with only a small compromise in the surge line which allows it to work down low in the rpms (assuming it spools to begin with) it will likely need some fabrication but that shouldn't be too much trouble.

I've been thinking about this topic a lot lately.

The topic definitely needs exploration as we are looking for ways to keep pushing these tiny turbos, they will eventually need rebuild/replacement.

As OP stated, The BW K03/K04 swap in the audi/vw world literally is a direct 'drop in' replacement due to the K03/K04 housings are identical which allowed perfect fitment of the K04. (K04 featured a larger impeller wheel)
I'd love to hear if Garrett also has unit that uses a 1446 housing with an uprated chra of some kind.

ATP just put on their website an upgrade that machines the stock turbine housing and drops in a Garrett GT1752S CHRA and compressor along with associated oil and coolant lines/adapters.

    http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant...gory_Code=FIAT

They claim 230HP but this is probably assuming taking control of the ECU. With the stock ECU tune it's probably a good HP gain as it'll flow better for a given PSI. Getting the most out of it will require keeping the boost pressure steady to redline.

Just as an aside, the GT1752S is also used in the 2nd-gen Saab 9-3. In its highest tune it was 207 HP and 220 LbFt from a 2.0L.

i think it uses the t25 flange, but there are different flanges for the downpipe. the intake uses hoses and could easily be adapted for other intakes. a lot of it is pretty modular so if you found a bigger exhaust housing with the right flanges and an internal wastegate you could cobble something together. the trick is finding a bigger exhaust housing and tubine to match. you could do a hybrid with the stock exhaust but it's gonna be restrictive. even if you clipped the stock turbine you are blowing through a very small hole.

I think is the turbo that the 13.6 white drag car was using (and testing for ATP in the process). IIRC, he also had upgraded injectors, but was still running a stock tune. I remember him saying that the turbo he was running was good for 30 hp above and beyond anything else the stock turbo could deliver, ceteris paribus (regardless of other mods or software). That seems to jive well with this 'new' ATP offerings...

I think he was running a 2052 and then went up to a 2058.

You're right... I thought he was testing for ATP, so I made the wrong connection there. I really wish he didn't drop off face of earth... :-)

This upgrade looks promising but for that kind of money, I think I will wait for something with a little more capacity for power.
