View Full Version : R&D on our NEW Exhaust!

MADNESSLuckyJay

We are starting the R&D on our new FIAT 500 ABARTH exhaust system! Our Lead Fabricator Jason Steen is hard at work engineering an ALUMINUM exhaust! Yeah, that's right... Aluminum! Engineered for performance we will have these exhaust available as single dual tips, and dual center tips, we are thinking of also offering a dual-dual kit, so if you'd like a system that has split dual exhaust leave a comment for us!

I'm sure we'll get sound as soon as they have it fitted to the car. :)

I can't wait to see (and hear) the finished piece!

What is the diameter at the Downpipe going to be? Will this diameter be maintained throughout the length of the exhaust up to the rear Y pipe?

We will post video of how it sounds when we get it built and installed. I wanted to give a little teaser of the fabrication stage, we have a great shop here and some really talented people, but you could never know about that unless we showed you!

We plan to have this exhaust available in Stainless Steel and in Aluminum as a Special Order Item.

The goal is to design and manufacture a well built system right here in the US and at the same time make it very affordable. We are also designing this system with the ability to choose a side exit or a center exit option and the ability to select a number of custom exhaust tips.

And here we go! I got some more pics of testing the new exhaust system, we will have this available in both stainless and aluminum! (I happen to weigh the aluminum test piece and it only weighs 4 pounds!) You'll notice that we are using our racing history to bring you Race-Bred performance parts, just check out those V Bands on our new pipes! And for all of us audiophiles out there... of course a video of how it sounds! The test car is a 2013 ABARTH with our 500 MADNESS High-Flow Intake. One thing is for sure, you will definitely notice your blow off valve now!!!

I don't know if it's my speakers or what, but I'd love a deeper tone to it. Other than that, I love the idea of dropping weight and 4lbs is AWESOME! Can't wait to hear what this sounds like under load. :) Great job guys!

Any chance of a custom, 4 tip dual side exit? (Like the Magnetti Marelli Record Monza)

You guys have a race history??? Rally? B-spec? How many races have you won?

Race History. We would not have the name we have if we did not have a race history. THe website needs to reflect that more. In the end, it is a long write just to comment on race wins. There are just too many. Anyways, the new website will reflect the 30 years of racing background. Everything from FIA championships to winning Pike's Peak should make it clear to all. Hope that clears it up.

I wasn't aware of aluminum rusting?? Have you had this happen before? The stock steel one weighed in at about 16lbs! So that's a pretty good drop! Not sure what the pricing will be yet as we are still doing R&D

Hey Guys, I wanted to post some Bios of our team members over here at 500 MADNESS. We have Bios on our Lead Tech Alain, our Lead Fabricator Jason, and myself. The goal of this is to show you some of the people that work over here, and to let you see some of the things we have done in our past. Our educations have come from these real-world experiences and we are now putting that knowledge into the FIAT 500. So when we use the words Race-Inspired or Race-Bred, it is because we are using our knowledge of racing to develop these products for you guys. That is something that all of us over here have in common, we really enjoy these cars and love being a part of customizing them!

Jason Steen: Lead Fabricator
For 12 years Jason has had his hands on more race cars than most men dream about, as the owner of Steen Chassis he has accumulated several Championships and Podium Finishes. Even racking up a Championships in Drag, Drift, and Road Racing!
Where only the 1/4 mile is a concern, Jason has built cars for Stephan Papadakis, Jojo Callos, Ed Bergenholtz, Christian Rado, and Vaughn Gitten Jr. He also built the first 9 second All-Motor Honda, driven by Leslie Durst!
In the world of getting sideways, Steen has helped slide many cars through the Drift Circuit. Anything from making brackets to full, turn-key builds, Jason was a part of AEM, Bergenholtz, Justin Pollack, Brian Bridges, and smaller teams drift cars.
We all know some people like to go fast AND make turns, Jason also has hands-on experience with Road Racing. Honda America and Mazda Speed have used his expertise to make sure their cars get around the track. Add to that the number of personal track cars he’s built for people and you could fill up a WalMart parking lot!

Alain Hoorelbeke: Lead Tech
It’s been 11 years since Alain stopped hanging out in race car shops and started working in them. He got his start when he was still living in Belgium, working for Team Carlier Racing. Carlier is a BMW Racing Team that competes in Circuit Racing and Hill Climbs all over Europe! Alain was an all-around man for Carlier, working on every part of the race cars: mechanics, chassis work, fabrication, engine modification, machining parts, body work, and even making his own carbon fiber parts!
For two years Alain worked for BMW, but then his racing passion lite up again and he went to work for VDS Racing Adventures, and things became really fun! VDS races BMW and Ford Mustangs around the world, even Dubai and all over Africa! Alain has prepped cars for a dozen 24 Hour Races to date, and his cars have finished every time! With VDS Alain got great experience working with GT4 and GT3 Mustangs, cars that most of us only get to drool over!

Juergen Hess (aka Lucky Jay)
Over 14 years ago now Juergen left school to work full-time in the Racing Industry. He spent 7 years working for JE Pistons, not only handling all of their advertising, but also inspecting raw forgings, designing pistons, and working with the President of the company to help make the machining process more efficient.
After working for JE, he had the opportunity to be a part of a company he looked up to as a kid, Edelbrock. For Juergen, working there was like working at the Automotive Mecca! He was their Senior Designer, but also got to work hand in hand with the engineers to learn about Air-Flow Dynamics and help with Product Development. Working there was great for him as it served as an education on everything automotive.
During these stretches at day jobs, Lucky Jay was spending his weekends and nights learning everything he could about race cars and fabrication, as it is his passion. He worked on numerous race cars, especially in the Sport Compact market, and even landed himself two NHRA Championships with his team. He put in the hours to learn enough to build some of his own vehicles, like his hand-made custom chopper, and numerous hot rods.
People took notice of his work designing and building quality cars when SPEED Channel offered him a TV show about his work. He teamed up with his best friend, and follow car guy, Tyson Beckford to film Fine Tuned, which you can still watch on Discovery Turbo in over 30 countries around the world!

Uhhh... No. Aluminum doesn't rust. It corrodes, and actually you WANT that to happen because the layer of Aluminum oxide that forms acts like a protectant. Aluminum is a very AWESOME choice for an exhaust system and I'm excited to see what else can be done!

Any updates on this? How soon before we have pricing and availability for the aluminum version? I'm having a custom made intermediate pipe made to fit my TMC down pipe and would like to give the aluminum axel back a try to see how the sound is.
My only concern with the aluminum is, Cracking due to all the vibration. I drive 120+ miles per day to and from work, So I'll know pretty fast how it holds up!

Reason for the dumb Question my Betty,s 16 Year old Teen Goth Vampire wants her 1st black Fiat with some pink Details like Wheels and Muffler Tips. I guess the new Generation of the Darkside just got abit lighter........

And yes her Mother and me are speechless....... thats not what we tought her. When she was a Baby she liked Manson and Nina Hagen.

I blame myself for it because i played way too much of Nina Hagen the Punk Queen from East Berlin when she was little....

Thanks Zack. Excellent technical read on why and how aluminum corrodes. It explains a lot about why the old Abarth Zagato and most of the other old exotics with aluminum bodies suffer as they do. If the builders knew then what is known about aluminum today, the metal shells on all of these old cars would likely still be in near perfect condition. As it is, they're a lot of work to keep them looking healthy.

Lucky Jay,
Given all that, what type of aluminum alloy are you guys going with for the exhaust? Great idea btw. I'm seriously considering it for the new Abarth.
