I am looking to buy a set of winter wheels.
I found a set with the proper 4 x 98 bolt pattern. However, they are 17 x 6.5 instead of 17 x 7.
Can anyone tell me if that .5 difference matters? Can I still use the 205 40/17 tire size?
Thanks,
Sam

1) What is the offset, this is at least or more important than the width for fitting?

2) The only 205/40-17 winter tire that Tire Rack has requires a minimum of a 7" rim. You could put on a 6.5" rim, but it would not be optimal.

3) But the good news is, if you are actually going to see snow, a narrower tire can be better.

Offset is 35.

Why not use a 16" wheel? Tall and skinny work well in the winter, plus it *may* be easier to find tires?

I like the look of 17's. But yes, I am considering 16 sport wheels.

You need to check more tires.

W rating is 168 MPH. Y rating for 186.

W rated 17" tires:

Pirelli P Zero Nero 205/40-17 Hmm, that size sounds familiar, like the stock 17" tires on a Abarth. Also 215/40-17s
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec in ALL 17" tires.
Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 - ALL 17" tires.
Bridgestone RE-11 - ALL 17" tires.
Bridgestone RE050 - ALL 17" tires.

Y rated 17" tires:

Michelin Pilot Sport Super Sport - ALL 17" tires
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 - ALL 17" tires
Bridgestone S-04 - ALL 17" tires

Plenty of W and Y-rated tires in 17". Less in 16", but they are still available.

I was just wondering what will fit on a 17 x 6.5 wheel.

Your biggest problem is finding tires of the proper diameter so as to not screw with the speedometer reading or acceleration. Tirerack's specs show the recommended wheel widths for most tires but they're not hard and fast. Generally, you have the stock 205/40-17 and perhaps (depending on specific model) 215/40-17 to work with on 6.5" wide wheels vs. the stock 7.0".

Check the spec tab for the tires you're interested in on Tirerack and look at the diameter column first to see where to start.

The blizzak ws60 in 205/40 should be fine on the 6.5 in rims. Its not like you will be carving apexes right? ;-)......call tire rack they will advise authoritatively.
