I see the new Dodge Dart is offering a choice of three engines that includes the 160 HP Abarth 1.4L MultiAir Turbo:

I see this as the way of the future. there will always be room for big engines for large cars that people want. However, I see the trend moving toward smaller engines that have lots of power for their size, yet are fuel efficient. The Dart actually looks pretty nice as well. I'm curious to see what the Alpha Romeo will look like when they build it in the U.S. next year?

yes, even today`s paper had an article noting that 3 cylinder cars are on their way to us. (Not just the Smart.)

3 cylinder engines aren't new to the US. Remember the Chevy Spirnt from 1987?? Chasis twin the Suzuki Swift and later the Geo Metro. Although, the new ones will most likely have more power.

I had a 3 cylinder back in the early 90s. A Geo Metro. 46MPG. My cat could outrun it but it was great on the pocket book.

Lest we forget that fantastic Saab 96 with a 750cc two-stroke three cylinder block!
