Hi all. Had a great trip down to Nashville last week for this year's FFO...my 20th one, if I've counted correctly. Each is better than the last; those who weren't there, haven't been in a while, or have never gone, this is a MUST-ATTEND event for any Fiat enthusiast. Save those mid-July weekend dates on your calendar for next year.

Anyway, here's the point of my post. For those who haven't seen/heard, THIS was our ride to and from FFO this year:

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e1K-QcdiypQ/WXN_bhnJhhI/AAAAAAAAyj0/ZkThmnDP0Dg_edJPxFIXEhDcEIW0hFNFwCKgBGAs/s600/Fiat-500-Towing.jpg

http://www.fiatlancia.com/1270.JPG

That's our fully-functional 1970 Fiat 500L on a new aluminum 54"x10' tilt-bed trailer, hooked up to the European-Fiat-Dealer-Sold Westfalia hitch on our new 500. The hitch is rated at 800kg (~1800lbs), the trailer is rated for 1500lbs and weighs 275 itself, and the 500L weighs about 1100lbs. So everything was legal, and our Prima towed WONDERFULLY.

We traveled from our home in Douglassville, PA (near Reading, about an hour NW of Philly) to visit and stay with friends in Roanoke, VA, and then continued on to Nashville, TN the next day. The return trip was the same, in reverse; we overnighted with the same friends in Roanoke and took the same route (I-40, I-81, I-76, I-176, Rte. 724).

We did no less than 60mph and no more than 70 mph the whole way, almost all in 5th but I had to downshift to 4th about a dozen times each way to get up some of the steeper/longer hills. I did coast ("idling", not "off") down a few larger hills. NO A/C, windows down except when it was raining. We hit about 2 hours of rain in each direction. Approximately 1/4 of the trip was done with cruise control on (where there were no large hills). Total trip was around 1800 miles.

I've kept records of every drop of fuel put into the car since it was new, and I used the "B" odometer for this FreakOut trip towing the trailer, as well as calculations from gas receipts as always.

So in the spirit of fun, here's the contest: what do YOU think our MPG was for the trip?

To make it more interesting: the winner wins some 500 stuff. The best guesser will get a "MINIER than MINI, SMARTER than SMART" tee shirt and decal for their 500 (or other small car!), postage included. (See link below signature for photos/descriptions).

We'll play "Price is Right" rules - closest without going over. All guesses must be made here (not by email or PM) via forum post/reply by 11:59:59 PM EST Monday, August 8th. One guess per person. To be fair to early guessers, no other questions will be answered or no other info provided. In case of a tie, first answer in gets the tiebreak.

Good luck and happy Fiating!

Since you have been achieving very good overall mpg to date, I am guessing much higher than I would otherwise: 39.8 mpg

Likewise, Chris...great seeing you in Nashville as well. Sorry I didn't get a chance to say hi to your wife and son while there - the weekend just disappears in a flash every year!

Thanks for posting that cool pic - that's the only one of our rig "in action" that I'm aware of.

That reminds me when I was young and worked at an Italian car repair shop. I used to tow all soughts of cars with a Fiat 124 Spider, though back then, we just used a rope! ;)

Okay, here are all the guesses and guessers:

31.6 FiatGusto
32.5 Fiat500USA
33.1 SJMST/Sam
33.4 PE#389/Luigi
33.9 Terry
34.2 Rossonero404
35.0 Fiat_Ohio
36.6 Hoicho
37.2 Prima 109
39.8 Alvon
39.9 Thad

And the winner is...

Fiat_Ohio!

Our overall mileage for the Nashville trip, towing the 1970 500L, was 36.0mpg, which is by far the best MPG I've ever gotten while towing another car! LOL!

Honorable mentions for guesses have to go to Hoicho and Prima 109 as well, because our overall mileage on the way TO Freakout was actually 37.2. Here are the indicated mpg readings (each tank and cumulative for trip) at each fill-up:

35.5 35.5
37.9 37.2
37.2 37.2
34.6 36.5
35.0 36.2
35.7 36.0

So congratulations to Fiat_Ohio for having the best guess; send me the t-shirt size you'd like, and your mailing address, to FiatLancia@gmail.com and I'll get that shirt and decal right out to you!

Hoping everyone had fun playing and considering what our little cars are capable of!
