I'm starting a series on car building. We will be building one car a year starting with the A124. The first episode will be out in January. Here's the teaser video. Make sure you subscribe to follow the build.

Very cool, what types of modifications do you have planned? (if you can spoil things for us) Based on your avatar I imagine you will delve quite a bit deeper into the car than your average bolt on modder.

The first couple episodes are the supporting mods. We will progressively move through them until we get to dropping in the built engine. I wish this had started before putting the GT1752 in but I figure it's fine as that turbo will be replaced towards the end of the series.

Watch this 124 go from mildly modded to a built engine, big turbo monster.

I'm highly looking forward to this. While I haven't posted in quite some time I check in on occasion - specifically to check on anything in the modded category and wrt future Abarth 124s that possibly will get an engine/power upgrade of some kind. There really hasn't been much of interest in these areas this past year...but this - what you're doing - is what I've been looking for. I'm still interested in an Abarth 124 as a possible future vehicle for me...but I will want one with quite a bit more oomph than what Fiat is offering,,,so will be very interested in following your efforts here - thanks!

Hey,
So what are your overall thoughts on the 124 ?
i.e. build quality, fit/finish, and most important how it responds to modifications. I have a 13 Abarth that I have had 48,000 trouble free miles on, 3 trips to the Tail of the Dragon, and just love the car.
Any way, thinking about trading it for a 124 Classica as all the local Abarths are optioned up to the 35,000 mark. For that much I will get a Mustang GT. ( cant believe I spoke those words, lol)

Any hoo, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
T

It's fit and finish is straight up Mazda. Which is a good thing. The whole car feels more together. The engine and ECU are the same as the Abarth 500 but it's made in Italy instead of Mexico. It responds to mods the same as the 500 Abarth except it has a mildly better OEM intercooler and the pipes are not the same funny leaky press fit of the turbo 500's. The gear shifter is amazing. I liked my 500 shift feel (I had the Cravenspeed 500 shifter) but the 124 makes that 500's shifter feel like you're moving a stick through a jar of peanut butter.

Very much enjoying this series - great production values and lots of excitement for this car... I've been considering an Abarth 124 for our next vehicle. This could still be several years down the road (as all of our great cars are holding up well). I get the 124/Miata...I really do. Just the same I'm a power junkie and I want a bit more. It doesn't have to be 400HP (per se) and I don't need to go e85 fuel or what have you. A good 300ish HP with maybe some slight handling & traction tweeks and I'm good to go with this...so I'll be following and perhaps (at some point down the road) looking for suggestions for getting to what I might want for this car. I do agree though - that manifold seems in need of upgrading...

In this video we install a 3" 200 cell catted down pipe. This thing sounds like a damn rally car?!

The 500's downpipe is way easier to install

Another nice vid,
What is the outlet diameter of the factory down pipe ? Is it reduced down like the Abarth was ? If I remember 1.75-2". And the out let diameter of the DP from Tork ?
Also Goodwin Racing had said in one of their posts the cross pipe was a small diameter and they gained something like 11whp from a redesigned cross pipe. Any thoughts on the cross pipe.
Just wondering how much can be freed up from opening up the exhaust on one of these.
I checked with 2 dealers on a 2017 and 2018 Classica's but the numbers are not working out and I will not pay too much for another FIAT, so it may be later rather than sooner for me.

The cross pipe is a massive restriction. I'm not surprised that Goodwin made that type of power from it. That pipe is being replaced soon. I will measure the outlet of the downpipe when I get the chance but I believe the flange was 2.25". The Tork downpipe is 2.5" out.

+1 on the comments of continual improvement. Particularly the speech/music volume leveling have come a long way since Ep1. Though you are slowly getting me back into chillhop so I don't really mind a loud soundtrack. =P

What's currently your favorite idea for the next car?

Thanks! We're trying to up the quality with every video. The next car is still an Abarth 500 but I'm still a little on the fence about what's after that. I know I said I don't want to do another MultiAir but I may need to do another to get an idea out of my head which is a vintage 124 with a modern Fiat engine.

Definitely, sometimes I just elect to use hand tools because I like them. There's loads of electrical tools kicking around the garage.

I would love a quick jack though. That more than any other tool right now.

Was just catching up the other night and chuckling to myself. I did my torsion bar swap with the car on the ground and other than some busted knuckles and removing some material from a wheel spoke (oops) it went great. On the flip side screwing around with the valvetrain scares the s**t out of me but you rated that as your easy job of the day. You've blown my mind with these spring upgrades, why don't they get more love?

Oh and you should pass on the word that we need more Lebaron episodes, that guy is great! XD

If I showed the full duration of the tortion bar removal... it was the tightest installation I had ever seen. Pain in the rear. lol

The valvetrain is a bit intimidating. The scariest part is first start. The car runs like hell for the first couple key cycles. As you keep starting the car, they clean up nicely. Ton's of people have been installing them lately and have had some good luck. I'm looking forward to someone (other than John and I) comparing them before and after on the dyno.
