View Full Version : Power Steering Cutting Out

For over a year now, the electric power steering (EPS) has been behaving strangely on long turns such as cloverleaf ramps.

The power steering will cut out intermittently, depending on the sharpness of the turn and the speed of the car. This has caught us by surprise many times and it takes significantly more strength to fight the steering and bring the car through the turn. I'm not sure but I think the ABS may also be glitching simultaneously, making me wonder if something in the Stability Control is either glitching or badly connected.

The car has seen a dealer 4 times now.

Dealer 1 Visit 1: 12/2015. Software update. Test drove and found problem resolved.
Dealer 1 Visit 2: 12/2016. Problem resurfaced again. Dealer acknowledged behavior problem but found no error codes.
Dealer 1 Visit 3: 12/2016. Replaced steering column & EPS module. Test drove and found problem resolved.

Dealer 1 shut down 2 months ago, but the steering problem resurfaced again. This time the assist cuts out even longer than with the old steering module. We brought the car to another dealer.

Dealer 2 Visit 1: 02/2017. Found no errors, could not locate a suitable place to road test. Car still at Fiat of Burlingame.

We escalated the issue to corporate and have a case number, but I'm not sure they are talking to each other at the moment. The dealer said I should just pick up the car, and I refuse to do so with such a safety-related problem.

We really like everything else about our car, but this issue is dangerous and the inability of the dealers to resolve this problem is not encouraging.

I hope to get a better response from FCA in the coming days, but any tips or thoughts here would be appreciated.

I have the same issue with mine. I took it to two studios and they could not find anything wrong with it. I think FIAT knows of the problem but they do not want to fix it because it will create a recall issue. I think it has to do with their design of their EPS. I checked in YouTube and some previous Fiat had issues with the EPS. They would have to completely redesigned the system and with not much sales I doubt they are willing to do it. I love my 500L I just hope it doesn't get worse. My problem comes and goes and is very minimal. If you look in the forum. We are not the only ones with this issue.

Thanks Laz, hope FCA comes around. It can't possibly be a common issue (otherwise it would be on the news) and I hope it can be resolved with a deeper understanding of its calibration.

Hello, and welcome to the form. I have a 2014 L myself.....and have never had this happen to me.....very odd.....I even tried to make it happen......nothing, steered fine on both long interstate ramps i tried on. The only thing I noticed was in starting the car, you can not turn the wheel right away, it's like the power steering is waiting for an answer from the computer, to respond....and it always does, for me in a couple seconds.

Very interesting problem you have, please keep us updated, as to what happens. You can also message Fiatcares on here, and give your name and VIN number, I'm sure they will follow up as well, for you.

Good luck!

Joe

Thanks for the input, Joe.

I was finally able to reach my FCA case manager today, after more than a week of calling. He was apologetic and promised to be more responsive, and told me that he would propose to the dealer to install a black box in my car to attempt to log this type of event. I will try to call him back tomorrow for an update.

Great news. That is a start, not to hope for bad things to happen, but maybe if you can have that installed, it will pick up something, useful.....and then perhaps, a fix.

Thank you, for the update.

I assume they did check the battery ? On my wife's Alfa Mito, the electric steering dropped out intermittently, she was at the shop a couple of times, until they replaced the battery, which solved the issue. I have no idea how technically related the steering systems of Mito and 500L are, one could assume they don't use completely different designs ...
Seems your problems occured mainly in winter ? Do you live in a cold area ?

Hi Superchan7,

Did you ever receive a resolution for this problem?
We have the same issue with our 2014 500L.
Although it feels like a steering pump issue, I have recently discovered that the brakes were pulsing and when I turned off ESC with the button on the shifter console, it cleared up immediately & completely.
I am now looking to see if they have a Service Bulletin or Recall for this issue!
