I have a 2012 Fiat 500 Sport with a little over 50K miles. This morning I filled up gas and because it was cold out I left the car running. Eventually, the fuel guage showed I had a full tank but the Fuel Range Indicator is stuck at 55 miles. I tried turn the engine off and on and thought it would reset. It didn't. Any suggestions?

Is it fuel range A or B? Whilst on the appropriate one you push the button in on the right steering column stalk for say 5 seconds or so to clear. Its described in the owners manual.

If none of that works you could try disconnecting the battery for at least several minutes.

The fuel range is specific to A or B. Resetting both didn't do the trick. However, I unscrewed the gas cap after turning off the engine. After a few seconds I started the car (with the gas cap still off) and the range indicator reset.

As can be seen, one should never gas up with the engine running. It can cause errors or even a check engine light. It is also illegal in many places.

This post tells you how the gas gauge works. It is pretty sophisticated. http://www.fiat500usa.com/2013/02/a-look-at-fiat-500-instrument-panel.html

Please for the love of all life, turn your car off, don't talk on your phone, don't play with wool sweaters, don't play with balloons. Unless you want to blow up not only you but innocent people standing next to you. I thought this was common knowledge?
