View Full Version : HVAC recirculate

I'm curious to compare my HVAC operation to others in here to see if mine is normal. In every other car I've owned, when you turn recirculate on, the fan always blows harder and the noise level changes. Sometimes you can hear the door in the ducts closing. None of this happens in my X. The fan speed does not change or get louder when turning on recirculate or switching to max AC. I also notice that when the vent is set to fresh air and I turn the fan off, no air comes through the vents at all. On all my other cars, including my 500T, fresh air will come in through the vents dependent on vehicle speed when the fan is off unless it's set to recirculate. The fact I get no fresh air with the fan off and no change in fan speed when turning on recirculate makes me wonder whether my system is stuck in recirculate mode or if the X just has a unique system....owner experiences?

After reading this I did a test and yes there is a difference open/closed on the Recirc. When its open the rushing air has a low pitch and vica-versa for closed. I can kind of hear the door moving while pressing the recirc button. Also with the door open and fan off I have no air moving thru the vents at 50 mph. I need the fan to move air. I would get your recirc function checked out by the dealer. I have an Easy/coll #1 so same HVAC set-up as the Pop.

Edit: If you installed the Go Pedal and ran the wire between the kick panel and the HVAC stack make sure its not interfering with the slide cables that are on the side of the HVAC stack in the middle. I made a big loop with the wire inside of that panel.

Interesting that yours doesn't move fresh air either with the fan off. I've never had a car do this. How noticeable was the difference in sound when turning recirculate on? On my 500T, it's very noticeable, as on other cars I've owned. I'm not really hearing a difference on my X, but the AC sure is hella cold! Even with no tint, it cools off the interior pretty fast in 90 degree temps. I'm going to play with it and see if I can hear the door opening/closing from the passenger side of the car.

So, I DO have a non functioning fresh air setting in my X! Today, I played with it and discovered that if you start the car with the AC on and in fresh air mode, it's automatically in recirculate mode. If I turn ON recirculate and then turn it back off, the system does go into fresh air mode, but only for about 20 seconds and then it switches back to recirculate with no input from me. Something screwy is going on with the controls. I did retry it with the gopedal cable hanging out of the side kick panel just in case it might be causing interference but it still did the same thing, so that's not the problem. I've also noticed the fan making weird brief changes in air speed as I'm driving around. I can only guess that maybe the flap is moving briefly on its own. I guess I have the first warranty failure. Shame I didn't document it on the quality survey I just did though :(

I'm betting the fan speed brief changes is unrelated as I have that too. Just noticed yesterday. Your problem could be software related because it works, it just reverts back when it shouldn't.

Update on this issue...I had asked the dealer to look at it over a year ago and they claimed the hvac controls were working properly. Well today, I finally changed the cabin air filter and discovered what I suspected all along! The fresh air flap is right above the filter. When I started the car, the door was closed, as it should have been since it was set to recirculate. I turned recirculate off and the flap opened. However, after about 15 seconds, it then closed by itself, even though it was set to fresh air! The fresh air flap flat out refuses to stay open. This is why there is no fresh air coming through the vents at speed with the fan off when set to fresh air, like there is in every other car I have owned. I may have just discovered a flaw in the HVAC controls! Going to a different dealer tomorrow. Will report back on their findings.

Dealer actually listened to my concern and properly investigated it. They discovered the fresh air flap thinks there is an obstruction when there isnt one and is thus reclosing on its own. They aren't sure what's causing it and will need to tear my entire lower dash apart to troubleshoot it. Good news is I caught it under warranty. Bad news is when I take it back in a few weeks, I'll be out of my car for at least a few days, although the dealer is supplying a rental. The dealer has never seen this issue on the X. Very happy with the service at Winter Haven Fiat!

Update...after more then 2 weeks in the shop, part of that thanks to Hurricane Irma shutting the dealer down for a few days, I finally got my X back. Fresh air mode now works! Apparently, the flap motor was binding so the dealer replaced the motor and gears. My X's interior is the first one they had to tear apart so I was quite concerned but so far I don't hear any new rattles. Interesting side note...the receipt states the AC system had to be purged of freon in order to change the flap motor...odd if you ask me. I asked how much it cost Fiat for the repair but the bill hadn't been finalized. They only said it cost 10-12 labor hours, plus the parts; that's well over $1200!!!! Thank God for the warranty!!!

Dealer also replaced a fading driver side air vent. I'm still waiting on approval from Fiat for driver side door panel replacement due to separation (a month has passed since they sent the pics...) and the dealer can't find the plastic rocker panel anywhere and no one seems to know the part number (3 clips broke for no apparent reason, causing the panel to pull away from body). So I'll have to take it back to get these things replaced.

crazy! glad to hear that got taken care of! would like to see some pics of the door panel (I can't picture the problem in my mind) I have experienced a few minor issues with my x as well and so far the dealer and fiat has been good about fixing it.
