I finally pulled out a light jacket to walk the dog in NYC, so that means it's time to think about winterizing the 500x (right after this hurricane passes by...go figure). I'm not interested in putting the pretty 18" Lounge wheels through a winter and I doubt 45 series tires will be any better than they were on my old Mazda3 when it came to road impacts and traction. I'm trying to go down to 16" like on the Pop and base Renegades which will allow for 215/60R16 tires. After some considerable research I've found two steel wheels and three alloys. TireRack wasn't much help and the on-line chat person didn't understand the Renegade was the same chassis so why are there so many options for the sister truck and not the 500x?

Anyone else searching for winter wheels/tires? Suggestions?

Looks like there are many choices for snowtires in the 205/55/16 size.

I personally have Pirelli Snowcontrol 3s and it felt like going from ice skating to grippy summer tires last season. I think others are mostly happy with Blizzaks and the Snowcontrols

Will you be running 17" wheels then? Seems the 55 series will allow a taller rim but I'm more interested in a tall and skinny tire for the snow with lots of impact resistance from NYC death-holes. The base Pop runs 16" 215/60R16 which seems the littlest I can go for the brake clearance. I had a Saab decades ago with 15" tires that ran through ice and snow better than 4x4's at the time!

I got these for my wife's car and they are absolutely amazing. Turned her Chevy Cruze into a tank in the snow/ice/sleet. And a hell of a lot cheaper than blizzaks or similar. Treadwear was fantastic and almost non existent. At this rate they will last for at least 7 more winters. Ride was comfortable and pretty quiet for a winter tread.

I'll probably be buying a set here shortly for my Ion Redline so that thing can get through another winter.

I'll have a search for the Pirellis. I'm partial to Continentals but I've never bought snow tires. I figure with the extra ground clearance I hope to do some more snowshoeing this season. Thanks for the information based on your experience!

Where did you get your Pirelli Snow Controls? I can't find them on TireRack or DiscountTire.

I just realized I forgot the link to the ones I was referring to. These: http://m.ebay.com/itm/4-Hemisphere-HW501-Winter-Snow-Tires-205-55R16-91T-205-55-16-2055516-R16-/361395708071?nav=SEARCH

That's what I've had on my Abarth for three winters, and they're great, but way too small for 500Xs! My wife has a brand new 500X Lounge with the optional 18' wheels, but I've only just begun searching for possible winter tire candidates for her car. We ran General Altimax Arctics on her previous car, and they were fabulous!
