There are after-market Homelink mirrors from Gentex (check Amazon) for about $200. They do require some wiring and I'm not sure how it would work on a 500. Might be worth looking into!

None of them, I believe have Homelink.

After market. Is it worth the cost?

you can pick them up very cheaply on ebay - gentex is oem on many cars, so you can easily grab one for under a hundred bucks. If it doesn't come with pigtails, you can also get those on the 'bay, for about 20 bucks.

I have an autodim / homelink one on my abarth - it's a super simple install - if you have a cabrio, tap in to the top controls for switched power and ground. If you have a sunroof, you can go to those controls. Not sure if the e is just a hardtop? If so, you can conceivably run to the dome light power; supposedly power is shut down to the domes about 15 mins after ignition off (or you can just run the wires down the pillar / headliner.)

The keystone on the windshield was a perfect fit for my gentex - no wobbling.

It's totally worth it.

Can you share which specific model you got? I think the stock mirror already have some power to it for the dimming part, can we just disable it and trap it as the power source for home link?

ah, didn't realize that you guys have auto-dim stock. the abarth has the old-school manual ones. yes, you can use the same power for the homelink (and it will only work with ignition on, which is how I prefer it.)

These are low-power functions - you can tap the homelink wire right into the power source for the auto-dim, and both will continue to work.

I'll grab the model of mine later for you.

That was a bummer for me but I quickly got over it and put the remote in the mesh pocket on the right side of the console. Works like a charm and the range is better than any of the Homelink transmitters I've had on previous cars.

+1 I'd like to know a model that someone has got a clean install with

gentex 313 (no compass) or 453 (with compass)

works perfectly cleanly, and they're readily available on the 'bay. The gentex wiring cover works perfectly, so it looks factory (if slightly oversized.)

If the Used one you pick up (don't buy new, they're readily available for cheap used,) ddoesn't come with the pigtail you ,canget it for about 20 bucks on eBay. Just splice in to the power (both dim and homelink lines,) and ground wire from the stock aauto dim. It's a 15 min install, Max.

flash makes it look gross, it doesn't look that filthy in real life :)

at least on my stock manual mirror (iirc) it just unscrews, then slides right off. The keystone is ridged, and the mirror mount slides down on top of it. 30 second operation.

When you say "unscrew" are you talking about the screw (hex?) at the bottom of the mount behind the mirror? If yes, after unscrew, the mirror will slide down and expose the wiring harness?

Thanks in advance.

In 2017, you can always install a MyQ or other module in your garage that allows you to open with your mobile device.

It is a great backup for openers. Ever end up getting a ride home/want to leave through your garage without an opener/lock yourself out of house/not want to take keys when on a run or bike ride?

I just looked at my 2017 Fiat 500e, the mount is exactly the same as BMW (hex) type and not a wedge type like the 2013/14, so I think it is truly a direct plug and play...

I just have one question for you, do you just unplug the Fiat mirror's plug and plug that into the BMW mirror after you converting the mount base? Any alteration of the wires from the Fiat plug needed?

bigbadvoodooguru

The 10-pin plug on the stock 2017 auto-dimming mirror has a lot of wires... more than the three my Gentex 453 takes. I noticed there are what looks like some sensors on the top of the stock mirror... does anybody know what they do? What functionality do you lose if you swap for a 453? Is it the microphone, or the internal temperature sensor?
I know there is power, switched power, ground, and probably a wire that grounds when in Reverse.

Thanks!

compu_85

The sensor is a humidity sensor.

Your guesses about the wires are right... there is a switched power, ground, and reverse light feed. Some cars with homelink mirrors have a separate power feed for the homelink part - you can tie it together with the power feed for the dimming.

Oh, the Fiat mount is a "standard" mirror button. I put the mirror from a Nissan Maxmia in our 500e. There's no reason to change the mounting.

bigbadvoodooguru
10-19-2017, 03:52 PM
what would removal of the humidity sensor do? There are two, one on each side of the mirror, are they both humidity? Not sure how the AC would use it, or what the effect of not having it would be...
This is actually my first car with the weird Hex nut mount... usually its a wedge foot.

The humidity sensor is the one on the glass, next to the mirror.
The two sensors I am talking about are on top of the stock mirror itself... looks almost like a microphone array and/or internal temperature sensor...

Oh, yours must be different than our 13... the mirror was just a mirror. The bluetooth mic is mounted in the dome light.

The humidity sensor is used by the climate control to keep the interior glass from fogging up. The system tries to run the AC compressor as little as possible to conserve battery, but will run it more to dehumidify the air to keep the glass clear.

Humidity control is very good in the 500e because of this sensor, unlike our VW Passat, which is constantly fogging up the windows on rainy/damp days due to conservative compressor use.

It seems to be a common problem in EVs, which don't have the heat of an engine to dry out the air ducts. I followed a tip to hang a DampRid (https://www.homedepot.com/p/DampRid-14-oz-Fragrance-Free-Hanging-Moisture-Absorber-FG80FF/203716318) in the car during our rainy season, and it helped a lot.
